Selamta Family Project

Selamta Family Project Selamta creates Forever Families for orphaned and abandoned children in Ethiopia, because every child deserves the love of a family.

We use a family-based model to create a place where orphans are no longer orphans, they are valued members of a community. And families who risk breaking apart can find the resources they need to become self-sufficient. When women gain the tools to build sustainable livelihoods, entire families and communities thrive. ✨

We recently wrapped up an empowering business skills training in partnership with Partners Worldwide and Central Church. 🤝 This dynamic cohort brought together participants across Selamta’s programs - including current and former caregivers - each taking bold steps toward financial independence and entrepreneurship. 💼✨

Throughout the training, participants dove into practical tools for:

Market analysis and product pricing

Basic bookkeeping and cash flow management

Strategic business planning and customer service

Economic resilience is at the heart of strong, stable families, and this milestone marks the beginning of many new growth stories.🏡❤️

A heartfelt thank you to Partners Worldwide and Central Church for walking alongside these women and investing in lasting transformation! 🙌✨

🌟 Building Bridges: Hosting Somaliland & Local Youth Advocates

Yesterday, we were deeply honored to host an inspiring group of young leaders, bringing together advocates from the Somaliland Care Leavers Association and our local Ethiopian Care Leavers Association. 🌱

Many of these young men and women grew up navigating traditional institutional care—environments where the individualized, one-on-one support that every child deserves was virtually non-existent. Their strength, solidarity, and resilience in overcoming those systemic hurdles to advocate for others is nothing short of inspiring.

During their time with us, we had the opportunity to walk them through our community-integrated, family-based model.

"It's refreshing."

Hearing this word from advocates with lived experience was a deeply moving validation of why we do this work. It highlighted the stark contrast between the isolation of institutional settings and the warmth of a community that truly sees, supports, and empowers each individual.

Every young person deserves to grow up connected and embedded in a family. We loved exchanging ideas, sharing our vision, and building a stronger cross-border network with these bright future leaders. Thank you for an unforgettable visit! 🤝🌍

How do you measure a life changed?

It isn't just about grades or securing a job, though we celebrate those milestones. Success is a young adult who knows their worth. It is a parent who feels equipped to handle tomorrow. It is a family that stays together.

Somewhere in Addis Ababa tonight, a child is sleeping in a safe, permanent home because people like you chose to care. That impact is deeply personal.

🎓 Double the pride!
We are celebrating two remarkable young men graduating from university - one with a degree in Law, and the other in Pharmacy.

Their achievements beautifully illustrate why eliminating the "aging out" cliff in alternative childcare is so critical. When youth are forced to age out of traditional systems, mere survival often takes precedence over their potential. However, when young people are anchored in a permanent family structure and seamlessly integrated into the broader community, they are given the psychological and practical security to truly soar.

Through comprehensive, holistic support, we ensure that every individual has the lifelong foundation necessary to focus on their future rather than fearing it. They aren't just earning degrees today; they are stepping forward as empowered leaders and changemakers.

Congratulations to our graduates! 🌟

Dignity is not something we give to people. It is something every person already possesses.

The real heroes of Selamta are the people who create environments where that dignity can flourish. They aren't found in an office. They are the mothers and aunts managing our family homes, cooking the meals, navigating the hard conversations, and showing up every single day to build trust.

They are doing the hardest, most beautiful work in the world.

Families do not thrive in isolation. They thrive in neighborhoods.

When a Selamta family moves into a community—whether it's the Jimma home or any of our other family homes—they become part of the local fabric. They shop at the local markets, attend neighborhood schools, and build friendships over traditional coffee ceremonies.

When caregivers gain confidence and children stay in school, the entire neighborhood benefits. We aren't just building families; we are strengthening Ethiopia's communities from the inside out.

90% of children living in orphanages worldwide have at least one living parent.
Read that again.

Most children facing separation are not abandoned because they are unloved. They are separated because their families face impossible economic circumstances. Poverty should never be the reason a child loses their family.

That reality drives our Family Strengthening Program. We invest in families before separation happens, equipping parents to keep their kids safely at home.

Resilience isn't a trait you are born with. It is built.

Decades of research consistently point to one specific factor that changes the trajectory of a
child's life: one consistently trusted adult. One person who listens, believes, and stays.

At Selamta, we don't just provide one. We surround children with dedicated mothers, aunts,
social workers, and mentors. We build an ecosystem of resilience.
