Last week we had the plasure of welcoming Regina Nicolois, the founder and director of The After School Spot.
Regina bravely shared her testimony of being a child of a teen mom, a victim of abuse, a runaway and a homeless teen on the streets of New York. On her 16th birthday, she slept on the steps of a program that she had heard took in 16 year olds, gave them a place to sleep, and offered classes, mentoring and more to help give homeless teens a shot at turning their lives around. And for Regina, it was life changing.
To help prevent anyone from going theough what she did, started the After School Spot. It gave a place for middle and high school kids to congregate and engage, interact, and connect with one another. The program has snacks, games, computers, library and a wealth of classes and activities.
Part of what the After School Spot is to teach these students some life skills, like proper hygiene practices, sewing, meal prep, budgeting and banking, and other skills to make them successful, independent and confident young adults.
The program is 100% run by volunteers, so they depend on donations to cover overhead expenses like utilities, insurance, supplies, and security system.
The After School Spot is right across from the high school and an easy walk from the middle school. They are open from 3-6pm after school, Saturdays from 7-9pm, and every other Sunday after church.
They have had over 92 classes, and 310+ students enrolled in the program.
They are always looking for cash donations, hygiene items like deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, bar soap, and cologne/perfume, snacks, cleaning supplies, cases of bottled water...
