Hello Lake Orion Boaters! Well, the beautiful fall weather is upon us. Fall boating brings fewer boats, improved water clarity, quieter moonlit cruises. It also marks the seasonal removal of the buoys by the Lake Orion Lake Association (LOLA). However, it doesn't change the underlying boating rules.
Even without the physical buoys in place, all general state and local navigation rules remain the same:
• 100-Foot Distance Rule: Under Michigan law (MCL 324.80149), watercraft must maintain a slow, no-wake speed (5 mph or less) when operating within 100 feet of the shoreline, docks, and swimming areas.
• Canals & Narrow Waterways: Standard no-wake rules continue to apply in designated areas previously marked by buoys.
• Counterclockwise Traffic Pattern: Maintaining the standard counterclockwise flow around the lake helps ensure predictable passing for everyone enjoying the fall conditions.
It’s been a great summer. Let’s enjoy the fall boating while the weather holds up and above all continue SAFE BOATING!
