The Orion Historical Society, a 501(c)3 organization, was founded in 1994 as a community organization dedicated to the preservation of Orion’s legacy. Since the first organizational meeting early in 1994, dedicated members have worked hard at increasing awareness of our community’s unique architectural and historical resources. As a result of their hard work, more people have come to understand th

at preservation can mean a more solid future for the community. A sense of continuity grounded in buildings and places that have a significant place in our communal history contributes to our sense of well-being and connection to our neighbors. The members and friends of the Society continue to embody its mission statement – “…to involve people to actively participate in the growth and vitality of the Orion community through preservation activities and education about Orion’s legacy.”

Today is Michigan Cemetery Day! In 1915, the state legislature declared:

"The third Wednesday in August of each year is hereby designated as “cemetery day” and is set aside as a day upon which the people in townships may devote a portion of their time to the improvement of their cemeteries. The township boards shall direct the manner of making such improvements."

Do you know of an older cemetery? What is its history? How do you properly take care of elements such as headstones, monuments, fencing, and other landscape features? We have a best-practice guide for this! The Michigan Historic Cemeteries Preservation Guide can be used by communities, cemetery societies, sextons, and historical groups across the state and beyond as they seek to tackle some of these issues, all year round. We’re sharing this post from a local resident who is searching for a very special family heirloom that was recently sold at a garage sale.

The framed photograph pictured here is believed to be a portrait of one of her ancestors, and it holds tremendous sentimental and historical value to her family. She is also searching for a male companion portrait that may have been sold with it.

Hey History fans! Oakland County is celebrating the country's 250th birthday this weekend at the Oakland History Center. OHS will have a table there, along with other historical societies, plus lots of fun activities and demonstrations and entertainment. And ICE CREAM! Free admission too! 12-4 both Saturday and Sunday. 405 Cesar Chavez. Hope to see ya there!
