Today is White Cane Day!
The white cane is more than a mobility tool—it represents independence, confidence, and freedom for people who are blind or low vision.
Did you know that Lions have played an important role in the history of White Cane awareness?
In 1930, Lion George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club in Illinois, introduced the idea of using a white cane with a red band to help blind people move independently
The Peoria Lions approved the concept, produced and distributed canes. This initiative spread quickly to other U.S. Lions clubs, their efforts helped bring greater public awareness to the importance of the white cane and the rights of people who are blind to travel safely and independently.
In the years that followed, Lions around the country continued advocating for white cane awareness and supporting legislation that recognized the rights of people who are blind. Today, Lions continue to serve alongside organizations providing mobility training, resources, and life-changing services to the blind and low-vision community.
This White Cane Day, we celebrate independence, accessibility, and the power of service. 🦯❤️
