Inspired by 10-year-old co-founder Zhavea Leone, with a heartening story herself, of resilience and leadership. Zhavea's journey serves as a testament to the foundation's mission. By providing essential resources, including financial support to help families afford the high cost of medical care, supplies, and equipment, as well as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and other assistive devices to enhance independence and mobility, we aim to support those in need. Delivering food to these households experiencing financial instability. As the holiday seasons approach us, together we can be dedicated to helping families of children with disabilities and spinal defects get the resources and support they need to lead a normal and joyful life.

Meet Zhavea Leone!! Co founder of Forgotten Angels Inc.

A is a remarkable young girl who has faced and overcome numerous medical challenges due to her spinal defects. Diagnosed with Lumbar Lipomyeiomeningocele, a complex tethered closed spinal cord, Bilateral Recurrent rigid acquired equinavarus foot deformities, and a Neurogenic bladder, Zhavea has undergone multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy to regain her mobility and independence. Despite the adversity she has faced, Zhavea has maintained a strong spirit, showcasing her intelligence, personality, and determination well beyond her years.

At the age of 10, Zhavea has decided to start a non-profit organization, the Zhavea Leone Foundation, to assist other children with similar spinal conditions and provide them with the resources and support they need to lead a normal and joyful life.

Zhavea’s Journey

2016 (Aug)- Underwent Surgery to Release the Achilles Tendon on the Left Foot

2018- (Oct)-Underwent Surgery to Release the Achilles Tendon on the Right Foot

2021- (Nov-May)-Serial Casting of both feet for 6 months (resulting in a dislocated hip and a right proximal tibia fracture, which healed in some valgus and some right tibial external torsion

2021- (May)-Hospitalization for 5 days for Osteomyelitis

2023- (Sept)-Underwent 5-hour surgery to correct tethered spinal cord and excise lipomyelomeningocele

2024- (Aug)-Underwent surgery on left foot, including closing wedge astectomy and osteotomy

2025- (Aug)- Underwent surgery on left Posterior tibialis tendon transfer through interosseous membrane, medial cuneiform opening wedge osteotomoy, possible first metatarsal dorsiflexion osteotomy

Age 10- Decided to start a non-profit organization to assist other children with similar spinal conditions

Ongoing- Engaged in extensive and aggressive physical therapy to restore lower extremity nerve and muscle function

What is Spinal Bifida really……..

Spina bifida is a congenital disorder characterized by the incomplete development of the spinal cord and surrounding structures. It arises during the early stages of fetal development, typically within the first month of pregnancy, when the neural tube fails to close properly. This condition can result in varying degrees of physical and neurological disabilities, depending on the severity and location of the defect along the spinal column. The most common forms are spina bifida occulta, meningocele, and myelomeningocele.

The etiology of spina bifida involves a complex interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Maternal folic acid deficiency has been identified as a significant risk factor; thus, public health initiatives often advocate for increased folate intake among women of childbearing age. Early diagnosis through prenatal screening can aid in management strategies and improve outcomes for affected individuals.

Management of spina bifida encompasses surgical interventions, rehabilitation therapies, and ongoing medical care to address associated complications such as hydrocephalus or mobility impairments. Multidisciplinary approaches involving neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and social workers are essential for optimizing quality of life for individuals living with this condition.
