Behind every runner who crosses the finish line…
There's a volunteer who helped make it happen.

The 2026 Lake Lure Olympiad Run for Recovery is coming August 15-16, and we're assembling the team that makes one of Western North Carolina's favorite traditions possible.

There are plenty of ways to help, including:
🏁 Registration & Check-In
💧 Water Stops
🎉 Finish Line Support
🍌 Food for Athletes (prepare or donate)
🧹 Cleanup
🙌 General Assistance

You don't have to run a 5K or 10K to be part of Race for Recovery. You just have to care about this community and be willing to lend a hand.

Whether you can give a few hours, a morning, or simply donate food for our athletes, we'd love to have you on the team. Together, we'll welcome runners from across the region and show them what makes the Hickory Nut Gorge so special.

Because the medals may go to the runners…
…but the event belongs to all of us.

🏃‍♀️ Race Tip Tuesday 🏃‍♂️
Training for the Race to the Rock 5K?
Here's one of the biggest mistakes runners make on hilly courses:

Trying to maintain the same pace uphill.
Don't.

Instead, focus on maintaining the same effort. On steep climbs, it's perfectly okay—and often faster overall—to shorten your stride, slow your pace, and keep your breathing under control. Think "steady and strong," not "fast and exhausted."

If possible, incorporate hills into one run each week. They don't have to be long. Even a few repeats on a neighborhood hill can build the strength and confidence you'll need for race day.

And remember…
Everyone slows down on the climb. The runners who succeed on the Race to the Rock 5K aren't necessarily the fastest—they're the ones who manage their effort and save enough energy to enjoy that spectacular finish at Chimney Rock State Park.

Train smart. Run strong. Enjoy the climb.

Something special is happening.

As preparations continue for the 2026 Lake Lure Olympiad's Run for Recovery weekend, local businesses and organizations are already stepping up to become Community Partners—and we're grateful for the growing list of names that will be part of this year's event.

The Lake Lure Olympiad has always been more than a race. It's one of the traditions that brings our community together and welcomes visitors from across the region. This year, it also represents something even bigger: the opportunity to show the world that the Hickory Nut Gorge is moving forward.

For just $95, Community Partners are joining the effort and putting their names alongside others who believe in this place and its future.

By race weekend, runners, spectators, volunteers, and supporters will see the businesses and organizations that chose to be part of the story.

The question isn't whether the community will show up.
The question is…
Will your business be part of it?

Community Partner spots are now available, and we'd love to welcome you to the team. https://www.lakelureolympiad.org/community-partners

Runners understand something many people don't.
Every mile tells a story.

This year, your miles can tell a story of resilience, recovery, and hope.

On August 15-16, the Lake Lure Olympiad's Run for Recovery returns with two unforgettable races—the Slam the Dam 10K and the Race to the Rock 5K. Whether you're chasing a PR, tackling a personal challenge, or simply running for the joy of it, your participation means more than crossing a finish line.

By registering, you're helping support a community that continues to rebuild and recover. Every participant makes a difference.

And when you come to race, stay and enjoy everything that makes the Hickory Nut Gorge so special. Our local restaurants, shops, wineries, and businesses are open and excited to welcome you back. Spend the weekend exploring, dining, and celebrating with the community that has worked so hard to come back stronger than ever.

Come run with purpose.
Come run with friends.
Come run for recovery.

This Memorial Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who gave their lives for our country. Their legacy reminds us of the strength, resilience, and unity that continue to shape communities across America.

As Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Gorge continue moving forward in recovery and rebuilding, we are reminded that strong communities are built through perseverance, compassion, and people coming together for something greater than themselves.

Today, we remember. We honor. And we remain grateful.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day from the team behind the Lake Lure Olympiad Run for Recovery.

Congratulations to Patricia on successfully swimming the perimeter of Lake Lure!

What an incredible accomplishment — and we truly appreciate her choosing to support the Lake Lure Olympiad by encouraging donations during her swim. Thank you, Patricia, for your determination, generosity, and love for our community!

Please join us in congratulating her on this amazing achievement.

She did it! Congrats Patricia! 12 hours of swimming!!!

Swim for Recovery - The rest of the story. Woman to swim Lake Lure for Helene relief - Come out and cheer her on tomorrow, 5/8/26. See the route and estimated timeline and see the article below from Morgan Starling at The Daily Courier.

May 2, 2026
Part-time Rutherford County resident Patricia Temple is preparing to swim the main coves of Lake Lure on May 8 to raise money for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts and to celebrate the lake’s reopening.

Patricia and Jeff Temple live in northern Virginia but also have a home in Rumbling Bald that they visit several times a year. The couple bought the home seven years ago after participating in the Biltmore marathon and falling in love with western North Carolina.

But then came Hurricane Helene. Patricia Temple said they weren’t in Rumbling Bald when it hit and were unable to get to their property for more than two months.

While their home was left intact, much of their property saw damage and was washed out. But because the home wasn’t their primary residence, Temple said they were unable to get assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Things are a little less gloomy today,” she said. “The lake is coming back and we just started the repairs of our land.”

Temple’s idea for the upcoming swim fundraiser came in 2024 when she was training to swim across Lake Tahoe.

She said she hasn’t always been a swimmer but considers herself an endurance athlete. She was a single mom with three kids for a time when she started running, but she then got injured and got into swimming. Since, Temple has participated in many events, like triathlons and Iron Mans.

In fact, she said her goal is to run a marathon in all 50 states.

But on May 8, Temple will swim the contour of the main coves of Lake Lure, beginning in Rumbling Bald, as a way to not only raise money but also celebrate the lake’s reopening.

She said she’s a bit nervous because it will be the longest swim she’s ever attempted at once.

All donations will go to the Lake Lure Olympiad who will serve as the donation vehicle to then disperse the money to organizations or efforts specifically supporting first responders who made an impact during and after Hurricane Helene.

“During the storm days, people were stuck, bridges had washed out. As you know, it’s Appalachia, people are kind of remote. Some of them are not even registered with the town,” Temple said.

“It’s a different beast, so the responders, I think, have been totally underplayed, their role.”

The event, which is being called Swim for Recovery, will begin around 6 a.m. on May 8 with Temple planning to make stops along the way.

Donations can be made at https://tinyurl.com/2vwfcjkh.

“Hopefully, this just brings a little joy and laughs, and maybe, hopefully, some donations come in,” Temple said.

Some sponsors support events.
Others help hold a community together.

Bubba O'Leary's, led by Peter and Ann O’Leary, has been a steady and meaningful presence in Lake Lure for years—long before “Run for Recovery” became this year’s theme.

Through both growth and rebuilding, their commitment to this community has never wavered. They’ve shown up, stepped in, and helped move things forward when it mattered most.

Their support of the Lake Lure Olympiad is a reflection of that same spirit.

When participants, families, and visitors gather for this event, they’re stepping into a community shaped by people like Peter and Ann—people who care deeply about this place and the people in it.

We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and everything they represent.

As we continue building toward this year’s Run for Recovery, we welcome additional sponsors who want to be part of something real—something that supports both people and place.
