🍌Banana update🍌
I’ve been a little slow to update everyone, because quite honestly it has taken me a little bit to process. Banana was diagnosed with kidney disease in May and his kidney values have rapidly increased since then, but more recently skyrocketed from May until now and it didn’t make sense why when he hasn’t been symptomatic other than losing weight rapidly, which again didn’t make sense.
His ultrasound showed a kidney stone that is causing a blockage in his left urethra, which explains why his kidney values have gone so high. The vet compared him to a human needing a kidney transplant or dialysis. His kidneys simply aren’t able to work. Eventually they will shut down.
The options are a surgery that would cost $10,000 to place a stent to bypass the kidney stone. This isn’t a guarantee, is very invasive, and requires a lot of after care. We could remove the kidney, however his right kidney is enlarged and having kidney disease prior, his kidneys are clearly not working properly so we cannot rely on the other kidney to do compensate. Or we do supportive care at home.
So what now. Banana is a hospice cat. I have opted to do supportive care and keep him as comfortable and happy for as long as his little body will allow. There is no time frame. He has a repeat bloodwork appointment 10/2 so we can see again where his kidneys are at and go from there. He is free to be off of his special diet. I am doing subcutaneous fluids every few days, he is on pain medication and a muscle relaxer for the stone.
I am relieved to share he still isn’t symptomatic. He has his appetite, he is still stealing treats from Moosa. No other symptoms as of right now. I am keeping a close eye on him though, because I most certainly don’t want to wait until he is in incredible pain and suffering. His comfort is my main concern.
He is going to get all the treats and snacks his little heart desires, lay out in the sun on the patio as much as he wants, and I’m going to get all the Banana snuggles 💜
