A 6 year old in Japan walks into school for the first time and is met with something unexpected.

No tests. No grades. No rankings.

For the first few years, the focus is not academic pressure but life itself, learning how to behave in a group, how to share, and how to take responsibility for shared spaces.

Children clean their classrooms, serve lunch to each other, and learn to solve small conflicts without immediately relying on a teacher.

Formal exams usually begin around age 10, when many children have already built strong habits of discipline, focus, and cooperation.

The idea is simple: build character first, and academics will follow on a stronger foundation.
