We are unable to respond to emails or social media posts regarding animals. and 6 p.m.

By appointment ONLY 7 days a week. Appointments set between 10 a.m. CALL 262-248-5055 and leave a message. Calls returned beginning at 10 a.m. Animals must be brought to us the same day they are found. All animal care is provided at the hospital location by licensed wildlife rehabilitators and wildlife care staff. Necessary surgeries are performed by associated veterinarians. College students and recent graduates assist with care of some species of orphaned wildlife under the direct supervision of licensed rehabilitators during the busy summer months.

2022 HPAI: While Fellow Mortals works with any species of wild bird, we will be making individual determinations based on possible infection with avian influenza.

2022 MAMMALS: Mammals admitted include Beaver, Muskrat, Squirrel species, Cottontail rabbits, Opossum, Mice, Woodchucks. We are currently NOT ABLE to provide help with white-tailed deer fawn, skunk and bat. We are not licensed to provide care for fox, coyote, raccoon, badger, turtles or snakes. to find a rehabilitator who can help you. While you wait for a return call, keep the animal warm and contained but do not attempt to provide formula, water or food, which can cause injury or death to the animal. Thank you for your understanding, and your compassion.

This young muskrat was found in the lake near Pier 290 Restaurant swimming in circles, which is behavior consistent with having suffered impact trauma.

Fellow Mortals has admitted over 2100 injured birds and mammals already in 2026, more than any past year, and 80,000 individuals since 1985. The majority of these were successfully rehabilitated and released on private property made available to us for this purpose.

While we work with "high profile" species like eagles, loons, and beaver, we also work with house sparrows, starlings, and small mammals like this tiny, injured cottontail rabbit.

Sometimes a wild one is with us for months, sometimes it is with us for its last hours or days - we make the same promise regardless, to respect that unique wild spirit and provide the same kind of care regardless of species. The orphaned house sparrow is as precious to us as the injured bald eagle.

It doesn't matter to us whether a person can donate toward the cost of care - thanks to our generous community, and individuals and businesses who choose to be members of Team Hope, like Lake Geneva Area Realty, Inc. and Borskie Concrete Construction LLC, any caring person can find help for an injured or orphaned wild one - even if they can't donate so much as a dollar.

Our annual Wild Spirits event helps raise the funds to get us through the winter, when fewer people donate, but when the wild ones who need us often require the most expensive and long-term care.

Fellow Mortals has one annual fundraising event - our Wild Spirits Dinner & Auction. While tickets are limited, there are still ways for everyone to enjoy the event and contribute to its success.

Collectible Vintage items in excellent condition: Do you have a first edition, first printing signed book? Maybe a watch by a famous maker, like Rolex? A piece of Fostoria glass?

Items for Prizes: New items, including books, jewelry, games, etc.

If a young squirrel approaches you and climbs your leg or follows you — please don’t turn away, or put it on a tree, or take it to a woods.

This behavior is unique to orphaned squirrels who are often desperate and with little time left.

The squirrels may “appear” bright, with bushy tails but, when we pick them up out of the box they are transported in, they are light as feathers, skeletal and severely dehydrated, with some exhibiting that dehydration in the form of dehydration cataracts, which make the eye appear white. These disappear once the squirrel is rehydrated.

Orphans from the same family often are found separately - those who can’t hold out for hunger or who are braver venture out first, with the others following when hunger overcomes fear.

If this happens to you, give your local licensed wildlife Rehabilitator a call right away. Search for “licensed wildlife Rehabilitator - squirrel.”

The brother here has just been reunited with his sister, who was admitted yesterday. Their infant status is restored and they will receive formula after being rehydrated, and will grow up over a winter with us before release next spring to a beautiful protected woods.

West Nile virus has been hard on the birds this year - crows, hawks, owls, and herons, so this release was especially healing for us all - immature great blue heron admitted emaciated and in critical condition July 29 - released September 18.

It’s been a busy year for raptors-and the late summer is no exception. We are seeing primarily trauma-related injuries.

We have several hawks and owls nearly ready for release and as soon as isolation and critical care opens up - it fills up again!

There are currently two Cooper’s hawks, two Barred owls, one great horned owl, and three red-tailed hawks in intensive care.

We want to acknowledge the gifts made by the late Bonnie Alton and the Ruud family, who sponsored the design and cost of our heated intensive care units - literally lifesaving equipment.
