📌 Lizard Mound Park — West Bend, Wisconsin
📍 43°27’45.84”N 88°08’20.14”W

Nestled within the rolling landscape of southeastern Wisconsin, Lizard Mound Park preserves one of the state’s most impressive collections of Late Woodland effigy earthworks. Constructed between approximately AD 700 and 1100, the site originally contained 28 mounds, including animal-shaped effigies, linear mounds, and conical burial mounds. Today, 13 mounds remain, making it one of the best-preserved effigy mound groups in Wisconsin.

Despite its modern name, archaeologists are uncertain whether the prominent reptilian effigy actually represents a lizard, salamander, or another spiritually significant creature. The site also includes bird-shaped mounds and several conical mounds believed to have served funerary purposes. Together, these earthworks reflect the rich ceremonial traditions of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the Upper Midwest during the Late Woodland period.

LiDAR imagery offers a remarkable perspective on the site, revealing the subtle contours of the mounds beneath the tree canopy and highlighting their carefully planned arrangement across the landscape. Many Wisconsin effigy mounds have been lost to agriculture and development, making places like Lizard Mound Park increasingly important reminders of the region’s ancient cultural heritage.

More than a thousand years after their construction, these earthworks continue to challenge our understanding of the beliefs, symbolism, and social organization of the mound-building cultures that shaped Wisconsin’s landscape.
