Geneva Beer Enthusiasts

Geneva Beer Enthusiasts Geneva Beer Enthusiasts (GBE) is a club dedicated to all things beer. What exactly do you do? Good beer should not be consumed alone but, shared with others.
(1)

To be clear, this is a beer enthusiasts club, we taste, we do not brew. Homebrewers are welcome and encouraged to join, but by no means do you need to be a homebrewer to participate. We gather monthly (hopefully more often as membership and enthusiasm grows) to taste a variety of beers. The atmosphere and vibe are very low-key and social with no particular structure or agenda other than to sample

quality beer. Generally, there will be 8-10 beers to try, discuss, critique, and enjoy. So, it is our hope that members will not only enjoy beverages provide but, will take the time to meet and get to know others as well. When and where are the meetings? Meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of the month in the upstairs area at The Geneva Taphouse. Tasting begins around 7pm and goes until we’ve had our fill of beer and human interaction-usually 9pm. What’s a typical gathering like? Did we mention this is a low-key social club? With that said, the 7pm start time is more of a guideline than a rule. We encourage members to arrive early and patronize our host venue. The Taphouse has dozens of beers, meads, ciders, and wines to taste while waiting for things to get rolling upstairs. When you arrive upstairs you can check in and get a taster glass and a commemorative pen and collectable notepad-OK, the writing utensils are NOT commemorative, and the notepads aren't that collectable, but it sounded way cooler to say it that way. Once tasting begins the host will give you a description of the beer (brewer, name, style, ABV’s, IBU’s, etc.) and any other background that is available. In addition, the host will let you know what the pour size for that beer is; usually 2-3 ounces. We work on an honor system and trust that members will pour accordingly so everyone gets a sample. Typically there is some of each beer left when we’re done and members can revisit a favorite once everyone has had an opportunity to experience each offering. From time to time we will have a specific brewery featured and possibly a representative from that brewery available to discuss the beers and answer any questions you might have. Tastings are not intended to be like going to a beer fest. We encourage members to savor the samples, discuss with tablemates the nuances of the beers and to live in the moment. Consuming as much beer as possible and catching a buzz is NOT our goal, nor should it be yours. Frat parties and keggers may have been fun back in the day, but we’re hoping your beer drinking has matured and refined with time. So we can all enjoy the experience, please participate accordingly. And that’s about it. Typically, there is no official meeting with officer reports and agenda items-boring!. Occasionally, there will be things to discuss, like a change in meeting time or procedure, nothing too formal. Who can join? Anyone over 21 with an interest in craft beer. Beer geeks, nerds, snobs, and aficionados of all ilks are welcomed and encouraged. Beer connoisseurs, from beginners, to seasoned veterans, are welcome; if you have a passion for exploring and trying new beers you’re our kind of folks. If you enjoy sampling those beers with others in a social atmosphere, then you’re REALLY our kind of folks. What’s it cost? The Geneva Beer Enthusiasts is a non-profit, paid-membership social group. All fees from membership and tastings go back into the group. There is an annual membership fee of $20 per member. For each function there is a meeting fee, typically $15. In cases where more premium or specialty beers are being sampled, the meeting fee may be higher. In those cases, we will do our best to make members aware via social media in advance of the meeting. If you want to attend a tasting but not join, there is a non-member fee for each tasting, generally $5-10 more than member fees. Meeting fees are collected at check-in for tastings. New members can join at any meeting. Payments will be accepted in cash, or via Venmo, or credit card.

Just a quick public service announcement. The lottery for Great Taste Of The Midwest beer fest begins May 4th (may the fourth be with you!). I think you have a week to submit your entry, but check me on that.

Our experience has been that about 80% of the GBE entries get tickets; that’s 2 tickets per successful entry. We have also found that finding homes for extra tickets has not been an issue.

It’s arduous work but the GBE research never ends. In case you aren’t aware, 3 Sheeps is a really good brewery. Just say...

DM me (Jim Gebhardt) and I will pass along contact information.

Sounds like legitimate advice. 😇

A quick shout out to a new local business, and GBE supporter. 8 Maids cheese shop is a new business that has just opened in Lake Geneva. There will be a soft opening today until 4pm. So stop in and see Carey, pick up some cheese, and check out her new digs.
8 Maids is located at 723 Broad Street, across from Kwik Trip. Help get the word out and support local businesses!

So I ran across this article and thought I’d share it. Take a gander and comment on your take.

I’d say the top few I agree with. I definitely think Ope! should be in the top 10. I also think Topsy Turvy, and Fifth Ward out of Oshkosh should be included in the list.

Curious what you think.

Hey All, just a follow up from the November Meeting. As always it was great to spend time being social and tasting beers with such a fun group of beer nerds.

During the meeting we made a couple of announcements. One was to encourage you to wear ugly Christmas/beer sweaters (shirts or ensembles) to the December tasting. There will be voting and prizes.

Also, we promised to get you info on the Riverwest Brewers Shuttle running on Black Friday-it is free. Note that they list Compamy Brewing, but they are defunct. As a side note, I am planning on taking advantage of this opportunity. I particularly like Amorphic Beer and their BF release Major Particles. This year they have a maple variant! Hope to see some of you on Friday.

Hey All, join the GBE beer nerds at Geneva Tap House for our November tasting. Tonight’s meeting marks the start of our 4th year tasting great beer! Oh, and tonight is an Orphan Night as well. Sampling starts at 6:30pm. See you there. 🍺🎉

Quick reminder: GBE Bottle Share tomorrow night at Topsy Turvy, 7pm-?

I’ll be bringing a BBA Imperial Stout from Burial Brewing in Asheville. Let the fun begin. See you there!

Just a reminder that our OctobGBE meeting is Tuesday (tomorrow). We’re going to have a selection of beers from Asheville, NC area breweries. You won’t want to miss this one.

Just a quick reminder that as a replacement for or cancelled Biergarten tour to Milwaukee, a bunch of GBE members (and others that are interested) will be gathering at Topsy Turvy tomorrow afternoon. The general pkan is to arrive sometime around 1pm and see how things unfold. Russ has lots of great beer in the TT lineup, including Hopped Mess that was brewed with GBE member hops.

Looks like the weathers going to cooperate, so maybe we can hang outside.🤷‍♂️See you tomorrow!🍺

Hey All, GBE is looking to sponsor an Oktoberfest Biergarten event Saturday, October 18th. Now we know it’s technically past Oktoberfest at that point but biergartens are still fun and GBE folks are ALWAYS fun.

Anyway, in order to make this thing come together I need to determine if we have enough people interested to reach the threshold for getting a bus and setting things up. GBE will cover some of the bus cost, while participants would be responsible for their beverage/food cost, as well as a portion of the transportation cost. If we get 25 people, bus cost would be $20 a person-lower if we get more than 25.

The plan would be to leave LG at 1pm and be back by 7 or 8pm. Tentatively we would go to Von Rothenburg Bierstube in Germantown, the Bavarian Bierhaus in Glendale, and Kegel’s Inn in West Allis. Times and destinations can be adjusted as needed

In order to pull this off I need to firm up numbers to determine if it’s feasible. Then, if it’s a go, I need to secure transportation. In order to help bolster numbers we are opening this up to family and friends. I will reserve a bus TUESDAY morning October 7th. If you are IN let me know by Monday night Please contact me by email at [email protected], reply to this post, or respond by text if you have my cell number. I need the names of the people planning to go. Consider this a hard commitment-if we get 25+ it’s a go!

I hope we can make this happen. It will be fun! 🍺
