Our next People of Perlman feature is Henry Weltman! His Perlman journey goes from a camper from 2006 to 2013, Pio in 2014, SIT in 2015, counselor from 2016-2018, and Pio counselor in 2019. A second generation Perlmanite after his father Roy, these days Henry calls Brooklyn home, where he lives with his brother Jacob. Professionally, Henry is an Associate Program Manager at the Foundation for Jewish Camp, continuing to shape the future of Jewish camping beyond Perlman.
🔵What’s your favorite part about camp?
I’ve always loved the lake. Not for swimming, but for boats. Paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing. For years, I spent every hobby period out there, usually causing chaos with Jeffrey and Nate by capsizing other people’s boats (or our own). We became experts at the two-canoe rescue. Apologies to any lifeguards and Deb Glick.
Shabbat was another highlight. There’s nothing like getting “glammed up” in a Hanes white t-shirt for dinner, inevitably ruining it with grape juice, then changing for Israeli dance. Every Friday night I went berserk on the girls’ basketball court dancing, jumping around, and getting drenched in sweat. It was the most fun night of the week. Every week!
🔵How has camp positively impacted your life?
Camp has given me some of the greatest friends in the world. I feel so lucky, as an adult, to still have people in my life who I grew up with, cried with, laughed with, and even got into trouble with.
Beyond friendships, camp gave me a career. The professional development opportunities I had serving as a Pio Counselor, becoming a Cornerstone Fellow, and interning with the year-round team on development shaped me into the professional I am today. I love this work deeply, and I believe in the power of Jewish camp to change lives. Camp isn’t just something I did. It’s something that continues to inspire who I am and the work I choose to do every day.
🔵What’s a favorite memory you have of camp?
Probably being in Aladdin the musical with Jeffrey. I got to be Razuk, the head guard, got a couple lines and at the time that was huge. Jeff stuck it out and stayed in the play with me and I loved getting to spend so much hobby time with him.
🔵Shoutout someone at camp that has had a big impact on your life.
Blake Kennedy, Greg Saltzman, Jamie Yelham, Ido Rakovsky, PP14, PP19, my Levi Shabbat family (plus Julie Rose), and literally every nurse/doctor that ever worked at camp and put up with me, all of my B1 co counselors.
