As we begin Black History Month, it’s important to recognize that environmental justice is Black history.

For generations, Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by pollution, waste dumping, and a lack of resources to combat environmental hazards. These injustices aren’t just statistics—they’re lived realities in places like Lake City, where neglected areas bear the weight of environmental neglect.

That’s why The Hearth Project is stepping up. Today, our first community cleanup wasn’t just about picking up trash; it was about reclaiming and restoring our community. And it was hard work. We filled nearly 20 bags of litter and an overflowing bin of empty glass liquor bottles and Budweiser cans. This has to stop. Our neighborhoods shouldn’t be treated like dumping grounds.

We’re making sure our streets are clean, that our neighborhoods aren’t overlooked, and that we all have access to a healthier environment. When we take action, we honor the legacy of resilience that defines Black history. This is just the beginning.

…

Congratulations to our $50 winner, Logan McKnight!

Hey everyone!

Due to the snow on the ground, the Lake City Community Cleanup has been rescheduled for next Friday. We’ll still be focusing on Bridgestone Street, Burgess Street, Meeting Street, and Ward Street—areas that need a little extra care and attention.

We hope this change allows even more of you to join us as we work together to create a cleaner, greener Lake City. Stay tuned for updated details, including the meeting location and supplies!

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you next Saturday!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was more than a dreamer—he was a revolutionary who challenged systemic injustice in all its forms. His fight for civil rights extended to economic and social inequities, and today, we must extend that fight to environmental justice.

The climate crisis and environmental degradation disproportionately affect marginalized communities, particularly BIPOC, turning environmental issues into civil rights issues. If Dr. King were alive today, he would not stand for these injustices. He would call for bold action, uniting us to address the root causes of environmental inequality.

Let his legacy ignite the spark for change within us. Together, we can honor Dr. King by continuing his work—ensuring a just, equitable, and sustainable future for all. Environmental justice is civil rights.
