“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16
As outdoorsmen, we spend a lot of time filling feeders. At FCA Outdoors NCFL, we make sure that at each pond we fish, and at each spot in the woods we plan to hunt, the feeders stay filled with high quality fish food and corn so that there is growth, health, and stability. If we stopped checking them regularly and allowed some to go empty, it wouldn’t be long before the animals that depend on them started to suffer. In the drought we’re currently in, water levels are low and food is scarce, so the negative effects would be evident! Furthermore, if we filled our feeders with rotten food, pebbles, or put the wrong batteries in them, even a feeder full to the lid would be as ineffective as an empty one.
This has led to some excellent discussions in our devotional time with coaches and athletes, as we pondered the parallels between our feeder-filling duties and our walk with God. If we want everything in our life to be healthy, to grow, and enjoy stability, we must be diligently filling our spiritual “feeder” with the highest quality food that exists: the Word of God! In order for our relationships, our education, our careers, our teams, and our spiritual life to thrive, the Bible must dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16)! Every bit of it, from Genesis to Revelation, is God’s perfect and complete “food” with which to fill our feeders (2 Timothy 3:16). We must constantly and consistently fill our hearts and minds with it (Joshua 1:8), and the Lord has promised that His word will provide direction (Psalm 119:105) and defense against sin (Psalm 119:11). May we all keep our feeders filled with the sanctifying Word of truth (John 17:17)!
