Yesahcan Sanctuary

Yesahcan Sanctuary Our mission is two-fold: first, to shelter; second, to educate. A note from the founder:

It all started with Lady Gaga, and the rest is history! And voila!

Not only do we offer safety and a forever home to as many rescued farm animals as possible, but we also teach the public about more compassionate lifestyle choices, starting with food. In 2008, I became active in dog rescue, volunteering and fostering dogs with a local rescue organization. Then, in 2016, I heard about a Cornish Cross hen that needed a home. Considering whether or not to might expa

nd rescue efforts to chickens, I contacted the person that had originally rescued Lady Gaga. It was painful to learn that Cornish Cross chickens, commonly known in animal agriculture as “broilers”, are raised to grow abnormally large within a matter of weeks. Bred for their “meat”, these creatures’ lives are ended when they are a mere 6 weeks old. With roughly 60 billion butchered each year (9 billion in the U.S. alone) they are the most killed animal in the world. In addition to these sad numbers, the Cornish Cross chicken’s obesity can lead to extreme health detriments, just as with humans. Because of this, I knew the amount of time with Gaga could be limited, but still wanted to give her the best life possible. I coordinated the pickup and drove over three hours to meet her. Gaga settled in well, and a few short months later, I rescued several more hens. It was clear that I needed to find more land in order to expand rescue efforts. About a year later, while driving east of our then-home, the perfect location was spotted that had the makings of a beautiful haven for a variety of farm animals. The property had been a small ranch in its former life, with the name Yesahcan Ranch. Almost immediately after settling in, we received multiple rescue requests. Knowing that individual and community support would be critical to long-term sustainability, we became a 501(c)(3). Because so much of the ranch displayed the words “Yesahcan”, I felt it should become the name of the sanctuary. It was almost a play on words, with “Yesahcan” sounding like “Yes, I can.” This phrase became a motto of sorts, both for the animals who would live here, and the humans who would care for them. Yes, I can start a sanctuary. Yes, I can help a creature in need. Yes, I can live wild and free. Yesahcan Sanctuary was born! Here, we are committed to creating and maintaining a space that allows our residents to live their best lives with plenty of room to roam as they please. Not only do we offer safety and a forever home to as many rescued farm animals as possible, but we also teach the public about more compassionate lifestyle choices, starting with what we put on our plates. Yesahcan Sanctuary is designed to be a refuge for everyone who steps foot on its grounds. We feel fortunate to be able to share our days with so many loving creatures and to delight in this little sliver of paradise with each of you!

🎤 NEW RESIDENT ALERT 🎤

Everyone, meet the newest feathery friend to call Yesahcan home! This sweetie was found wandering alone in a nearby town — no flock, no home, just out there on her own. 💔

A good samaritan scooped her up and tried to give her a safe place to land, but the other birds in her new flock weren’t having it and started picking on her. So she needed a softer landing… and that’s where we came in. 🐔✨

Now she’s safe at Yesahcan and settling into recovery mode and will be in quarantine over the next month. Then, she’ll likely be integrated in one of the smaller flocks with Freddie and Florence.

Here’s where YOU come in — at Yesahcan, our avian residents get musician names (looking at you, Pharrell and Leona 👀), and this little one needs the perfect rockstar title to match her fluffy, resilient energy.

Drop your best musician name suggestions below! 🎶

🌱Our goal at Yesahcan has never been complicated: create a place where every resident can heal, feel safe, and be happy.

That’s it.

Not a number to hit. Not a checkbox to mark. Just soft hay, full bellies, slow mornings, and the freedom to just be, for animals who were never considered as anything but a product.

Healing looks different for everyone here. For some it’s learning that hands mean kindness, not harm. For others it’s simply having space to exist without fear of what’s coming next.

Every resident, every day, gets to work toward that. ❤️

Owen and Ruth started the day right: breakfast first, then straight to the pasture for some serious morning grazing.

No agenda, no rush, just two pigs, a full belly, and a whole lot of grass to get through.

Pigs know something we forget: mornings are better with breakfast and a little time outside. Owen and Ruth, we’re taking notes. 🐽💚

Step 1: Get in the pool. Step 2: Wait for the water. Step 3: Question your life choices. Ivey’s having a moment while she waits for her pool to fill up….patience level: pig in an empty pool 🐷💦

Felix is blowing his coat and we believe he’s never looked more distinguished. 🔥

Every spring, pigs shed their coarse winter bristles to make way for a lighter summer coat. A built-in wardrobe swap that helps them regulate body temperature as the heat kicks in. This is especially helpful as we enter the brutal Florida summer heat!

At his age, Felix has been through this seasonal glow-up more times than we can count. And every single year, he comes out the other side looking like the wise, gentle soul he is. Some things never change. 🌿

Pete’s story!

There were a lot of questions after our last video so here’s a bit more about Pete and how he made his way to Yesahcan Sanctuary! 🌱

As a wild piglet, he survived a predator attack that cost him part of his lower jaw. A good Samaritan got him to safety, veterinary care and a safe home.

He joined our family nearly two years ago when his original sanctuary closed, and he fit right in.

Pete does nightly rounds with me to check on everyone every day. He drops for belly rubs every chance he gets. He roots, wallows, loves his treats, and brings an energy to this place that’s completely his own.

Six years after someone chose to save him, Pete is thriving. That choice mattered. We love Pete ❤️

It is 5:22 PM. Dinner was supposed to be at 5:20. TWO WHOLE MINUTES AGO.

Pete is not okay. He will not be okay. Do not approach him until the situation has been resolved.

🦃 BREAKING NEWS 🦃

While I was away for a couple days, Lana appointed herself official sanctuary correspondent and had ALL the gossip waiting upon return.

Highlights from Lana’s report:

• Maddy may or may not have started a rumor that dinner rounds were “late on purpose”

• Cora Lee was seen giving Lenny the silent treatment (we don’t ask questions)

• Portia napped through approximately 97% of the drama

Lana, we appreciate your dedication to journalism but I’m going to need to fact-check these claims! 😂
