Lake Fork Valley Conservancy The Lake Fork Valley Conservancy protects, enhances, and advocates for the natural integrity of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River Basin.

We achieve this through community-driven conservation, research, education, and responsible stewardship. The LFVC emerged in 2010, combining the resources of the Lake Fork Land Trust and the Lake Fork Watershed Stakeholders. The Lake Fork Land Trust was created in November of 1998, and quickly focused on conserving wetland property at the south end of Lake San Cristobal. The Lake Fork Watershed Stakeholders formed in January of 2002 in response to increased concern about heavy metal loading in the upper Henson Creek watershed.

Another Bluebird season is complete! Here are some totals for the year:

- 140 bluebird boxes monitored
- 120 nesting attempts
- 520 Eggs
- 275 total fledglings
- 208 Mountain Bluebird fledglings
- 64.47% bluebird nesting success rate

This was the third year of Mountain Bluebird monitoring as a project of the Lake Fork Valley Conservancy in Lake City. Bluebird monitoring is increasingly important as bluebird habitat decreases with human development. Bluebird boxes provide nest sites to the birds whose options for nesting sites, such as old trees and wooden fence posts, are disappearing. By monitoring the boxes and putting the data into Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch, our Bluebird program improves bluebird nesting success rates and provides meaningful data for tracking population trends across the state.

Thank you so much to all of the amazing volunteers who monitored these nests all season. We are especially grateful to Hector Gomez for building new boxes and restoring old ones, encouraging volunteers, and raising funds to support the project. And a huge thank you goes to Judy Boyce, without whom none of this would have happened.

After several workdays, the second Yurt is complete at the Earth and Sky Center! A huge thank you goes out to Lyn Lampert, Tim Crist, and John Coy for making this happen. We are very grateful to Harvey DuChene, Craig Blakemore, Mandy Caldon, Harry MacKendrick, Patrick Woods, Zach and Paul Dutra, and Evan Milski for their time and assistance in getting this done!

Why August 12 Will Be the Biggest Stargazing Night of 2026

If there’s one night of 2026 to watch the sky, it’s this one. This is the first time a total solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower peak have coincided in the 21st century.

Due to excessive wildfire smoke in the valley, tonight's dark skies viewing at Slumgullion Pass has been cancelled. Hopefully we have clear skies for next week, August 11, when the Perseid Meteor Shower is near its peak!
