Tonight (March 18) will be a very good night for stargazing as it is a New Moon. Enjoy Orion as its faithful dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor accompany him on one last hunt before the arrival of spring. Also, there is a chance of seeing the northern lights tonight as well. Turn off your lights to turn on the night!

Comet Lemmon was not visible with the naked eye but camera could barely catch its tail. Can you see it? Regardless of the size, a comet is always special to see because they are so rare and they contain the basic ingredients of our solar system beginnings.

I’m out of town but can’t wait until next week to see Comet Lemmon in the western sky at dusk!!! ☄️💫🌠

Lake City Skies will hold its final stargazing program of the summer season tonight (September 17) from 7 to 9 PM at the Slumgullion Observation site. To get their head south on Highway 149 for approximately 10 miles. At the Deer Lakes turnoff (County Road 50), turn left. The site is on the left by two Forest Service outhouses (one new one old). We appreciate you dimming your car headlights when arriving, and when leaving the site. We anticipate clear skies for our viewing so it will be chilly. Make sure and wear appropriate warm clothing and bring a lawn chair and your inquiring minds! These programs are free to the public.

Hi everyone!
I am a generalist in nature so, as an example, in my work in astronomy with my public outreach sessions, I know a little about a lot. However, I get frustrated when I am not able to satisfactorly answer technical questions. When I did a program last in Creede, two such questions took place. One was on Leavitt’s Law and the other one was about my Seestar scope. I tried to answer, but I feel I got bogged down when it came to technical details. I do not want to come across as a false know at all because certainly and laughingly that is certainly not the case. I will do my best in the future to communicate properly the fact as I know them, but I will also encourage people to check out reliable sources for the most accurate information available.
I am posting some facts about Leavitt’s Law and the Seestar scope. Also, i include an image of the Dumbbell nebula from last night’s event.
Thank you for your understanding and continue support as we all try to learn more about this magnificent universe that we are part of.
