Cultural Connections: Creativity in Labor & Industry 🎨🛠️

Southwest Louisiana’s industrial roots have powered economic growth from the very beginning, but they’ve also shaped something deeper: a culture of craftsmanship and creativity.

From the earliest days of the region’s development, skilled hands transformed raw materials into something enduring. During the timber boom, local craftsmen used native cypress and pine to build the intricate homes and woodwork that still define neighborhoods like the Charpentier District. Many of these homes weren’t designed by formally trained architects, but by carpenters whose pride, precision, and artistry can still be seen in every carved detail.

That same spirit lives on today.

From sawmills to modern industry, Southwest Louisiana continues to be defined by people who turn raw materials into innovative solutions and products. Some craftsmanship is visible in historic architecture; some is less visible built into the processes and systems that keep our communities running.

The materials have changed. The tools have advanced.
But the hands and the pride behind them remain the same.🤝

🎨 Board Spotlight: Meet Payton Lundmark, Member at Large!

Payton Lundmark joined the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA Board out of a desire to deepen her involvement in both the community and the arts. Originally from Southeast Louisiana, she now proudly calls Southwest Louisiana home and believes the region’s remarkable culture and strong sense of community are fueled by the arts.

One of Payton’s favorite Arts & Humanities Council events is Spring Art Walk, one of the largest showcases of local art in the area, set beneath the beautiful oak trees on McNeese’s campus. Professionally, Payton serves as the Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Lake Charles, where she manages Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center and Central School Arts and Humanities Center and helps plan the city’s major festivals and pop-up events.

In her free time, Payton enjoys photography, gardening, sewing, baking, traveling, live music, chasing sunsets, and relaxing on the patio with a glass of wine. You’ll often find her spending time at one of her favorite local spots, Crying Eagle.

🎨 Board Spotlight: Meet Jana Crain, Board Secretary!

After moving back to Lake Charles from Houston, Jana Crain wanted to reconnect with the community in a creative and meaningful way. Joining the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA gave her the chance to meet new people, support the arts, and give back to the place she calls home.

One of her favorite events is Live at the Lakefront, a community favorite featuring live music on the lakefront. Jana is a litigation paralegal at Scofield, Gerard, Pohorelsky, Gallaugher & Landry .

When she’s not working or supporting the arts, Jana enjoys spending time outdoors with her pups and husband and visiting local favorites like El Dorado.
