Amid meticulous planning and community engagement, their exceptional efforts have secured a $40M HUD Choice Neighborhoods grant, propelling transformative change through visionary housing plans that replace hurricane-damaged units with resilient rentals, parks, and a bayou kayak launch.

This monumental win is a testament to the Fellows program's core belief - placing dedicated individuals in high-risk, low-capacity communities can lead to projects that change and rebuild lives.

Today, we’re proud to bring you our 2023 Quarter 1 impact numbers! Our small (but mighty!) SBP Build team of three + four incredible AmeriCorps service members, at times in partnership with other agencies on the ground in SWLA, are still here assisting low-to-moderate income homeowners along their paths to recovery from a 10-month disaster season that included Hurricane Laura, Hurricane Delta, Winter Storm Uri, and the “thousand-year flood” of May 2021.

Giant thanks go out to Nic Hunter Lake Charles Mayor for recognizing the AmeriCorps members who devote their lives to serving Southwest Louisiana for at least one ten-month term!

Our team was invited to witness the mayoral signing of this official proclamation declaring this week AmeriCorps Week in the City of Lake Charles this morning. Our SBP Build site could not do what we do without the dedicated commitment of service, time, labor, and heart that the members serving our site bring to our team. We are grateful for you, Karesha, Sarah B., Pauline, and Sarah S.!

This past Monday, our AmeriCorps members participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service! Volunteering with the faith-based rebuild organization Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders allowed our AmeriCorps members Pauline, Sarah B., Karesha, and Sarah S., to help complete one of the final stages of construction for a home in our local community.

It was a beautiful day, and our team is so thankful to FCDR for facilitating this opportunity for our AmeriCorps members!

Severe winter weather is coming; preparing your home to prevent plumbing issues and other damages is crucial. If your attic lines are not adequately insulated, turn off the water to your home and drain your pipes BEFORE the temperatures drop below freezing. Don’t forget to drain and disconnect your garden hoses and store them!
