Little word of advice from a hurricane survivor.
Some people in Florida are severely hurting during this time. People’s lives have been uprooted and destroyed. We have gone through trauma and extreme fear for our lives. Approach with grace and compassion.
This isn’t the time to shove religion at people, make things political, or tone police the victims who have gone through this trauma. Don’t say phrases like “you will be fine” or “don’t be dramatic”. Telling someone how to experience trauma is as bad as someone getting attacked in front of you and you downplaying it by saying those phrases. Just. Don’t.
These are people’s lives and families that have been utterly destroyed. It’s easy to make judgments from an outsiders perspective. Because I can guarantee that when you experience the same amount of trauma and loss you wouldn’t want someone to discredit your experiences. 💙
Let’s build a more compassionate world.
