Snapshot of one of our field technicians in action hiking through the forest.

A healthy forest on Mauna Kāhālawai is filled with a diversity of native plants. “Native plants” are plants that have evolved in Hawai’i over a long period of time all on their own without the help of transportation by humans.

Our native forests in Hawai’i have evolved over millions of years and are specialized at retaining water moisture from the clouds and allowing that water to filter into the ground and eventually into our aquifers. This is the source of water for many communities on Maui.

Our goal is to keep these areas as protected as possible, so that we can keep our native plants safe, and also protect our water supply.

A beautiful ‘Ōhā wai (Clermontia micrantha) photographed on Mauna Kāhālawai.

Clermontia is a genus of flowering plants endemic to Hawai’i (meaning only found here) and there are over 20 different species of ‘Ōhā wai throughout the Hawaiian islands.

The flowers come in many different shapes and sizes but evolved to be perfectly adapted to many native Hawaiian honeycrepers such as the ‘I’iwi and ‘Amakihi
