I already gave away little seals & monk seal mini books but in light of recent Maui events I have ordered 30 more mini seals. Then whenever there’s a monk seal I can help educate people with this poem approved by The Hawai’i Monk Seal Foundation.
Hawaiian Monk Seal'
I'm a Hawaiian monk seal special and rare,
I'm highly endangered and I need your care.
Dog that runs in rough water they call me,
I am only found in the Hawaiian sea.
For millions of years long before man came,
Now I'm unique no seals are the same.
Just over a thousand of us are still here,
And without your help we will all disappear.
We'll no longer be here to swim and play,
Or relax on the beach on a sunny day.
Or hunt the deep coral where we catch fish,
And spiney lobster a favorite dish.
Sometimes sharks hunt me if they can,
But what threatens me most is encroachment of man.
I get caught in your nets and ocean debris,
And sometimes I can't get myself free.
The beaches where we relax and have pups,
Are crowded with people and all filled up.
There are many people and we are so few,
So if you see me here's what to do.
If you are lucky and I'm on your beach,
For protection and safety stay out of reach.
If you find I have hauled out of the sea,
Always use the rule of thumb with me.
If you see a seal or a mom and pup,
Put out your hand, stick your thumb up,
Turn your thumb to the side,
Behind your thumb I should hide.
Then you're far enough away,
And we can both enjoy the sunny day.
Clean up your nets and debris,
Never leave them in the sea.
The rule all people should live by,
When I'm on the beach letting sleeping seals lie.
With your kokua, help and care,
And education so people are aware.
In the future there will continue to be,
The dogs who swim in the rough sea.
