Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community this summer? 🌟

Kafe Ìwé is looking for volunteers — and we promise it is one of the best ways to spend a few hours in Los Angeles.

When you volunteer with us, you are not just sorting books. You are showing up for children in neighborhoods where access to books and literacy support is limited. You are part of the reason a kid gets to hold a brand new story for the first time.

Here is what volunteering looks like at Kafe Ìwé:

📚 Help run a book drive at a school or community space
📦 Sort and organize donated books after collection events
🎉 Support pop-up literacy events — meet families, hand out books, create joy
📖 Read aloud to children at community gatherings

We do not ask for weekly commitments. Our volunteering is event-based, so you can show up when it works for you.

Do you have children's books at home that your kids have grown out of? 📚

Those books could change a child's life in a Los Angeles neighborhood where books are hard to come by.

Kafe Ìwé accepts book donations in good condition — especially books featuring Black, Brown, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous children and families. These are the stories that make the biggest difference for the kids we serve.

Here is what makes a GREAT donation:
✅ Children's picture books and chapter books with diverse characters
✅ Books in good or great condition (covers intact, pages clean)
✅ Bilingual books (English/Spanish especially welcome)
✅ Graphic novels and nonfiction for middle schoolers

The books we collect go directly to our miniature libraries, pop-up events, and community giveaways in underserved LA neighborhoods.

We have been sharing reading tips all week, and we want to wrap up with the most important thing we can say: 💛

You are doing more than you think.

Every bedtime story — even when you are exhausted.
Every library trip — even when the kids get distracted.
Every audiobook on the way to school.
Every time you let your child pick what to read.

All of it matters. All of it counts. All of it is building something that will last their whole lives.

Here are some simple, free ways to create a reading corner at home:

🛏️ A small basket of library books next to the bed (swap them out every few weeks)
🪑 A comfy pillow and blanket in a quiet corner
📦 A low shelf or even a cardboard box with a few books your child can reach on their own
🍽️ A seat at the kitchen table after dinner that becomes "reading time"

The magic of a reading space is not what it looks like — it is what it signals to your child. This spot is for reading. This is where we slow down together.

Children who have a consistent, comfortable place to read are more likely to make it part of their daily routine. And routines are how habits are born.

Reading together is wonderful. Talking about what you read together? That is where the real magic happens. ✨📚

Here are 5 questions you can ask your child after reading — any book, any age:

💬 "What do you think is going to happen next?" (Try this WHILE reading, not just after)
💬 "Why do you think the character did that?"
💬 "Has anything like this ever happened to you?"
💬 "What would you do if you were in that story?"
💬 "What is one word from this book that you liked?"

That is it. Five questions. You do not need a lesson plan. You do not need teaching experience. You just need to ask and then really listen.

When children are asked to think out loud about what they read, they build comprehension and critical thinking — not because you taught them, but because you gave them space to figure it out themselves.

Try one question tonight after reading. Just one. And see what your child says.

Does your child say "reading is boring"? You are not alone — and it does not mean they are not a reader. It might just mean they have not found the right book yet. 📚

Here are some simple tips for parents when a child is resistant to reading:

1. Let them CHOOSE the book. Even if it seems too silly, too easy, or too unusual. When a child has a say, they are more invested. Let them pick something from the library — anything.

2. Try comics and graphic novels. Dog Man, Smile, New Kid, The Baby-Sitters Club — these are real books with real stories, and they reach kids who feel like "reading is not for me." Start there.

3. Audio books count! Listening to a story builds vocabulary and comprehension just like reading. Try the free Libby app with your LAPL card — it has hundreds of audiobooks for kids.

4. Read together, out loud, no pressure. You read one page, they read one page. Or you read the whole thing while they follow along. It takes the stress away and makes it feel like something you share.

5. Never compare. "Your cousin loves reading" is not motivation — it is pressure. Celebrate every single page.

This week we are sharing simple, real-life tips for building a reading routine at home — even when life is busy.

And we want to start with this: you do not have to be a "reading person" to raise one.

You do not need to have loved books growing up. You do not need to read perfectly aloud. You do not need a big shelf full of books or a quiet house. What you need is just a few minutes together — consistently.

Here is a simple way to start a reading habit tonight:

🌙 Bedtime is your best friend. Reading before bed is one of the most effective routines families can build. It signals wind-down time, creates connection, and builds reading skills without any pressure.

Start with just 10 minutes. Read one short book. Ask your child one question ("what was your favorite part?"). That is it.

Over time, those 10 minutes become the part of the day your child looks forward to most. We have heard it from families again and again.

If you do not have books at home right now — the LA Public Library (lapl.org) has a free app called Libby where you can borrow digital books instantly with a free library card. No fees, no late charges, no trips required.

You are already a good parent. Adding 10 minutes of reading is just one more way you show your child their mind matters.
