Project Scientist

Project Scientist Project Scientist began summer 2011 out of the guesthouse of founder, Sandy Marshall.

Project Scientist is an education nonprofit that creates joyful and engaging experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) for girls* from underestimated communities. While working as the Executive Director and Founder of The NASCAR Foundation, Sandy learned of the disadvantages that girls and women have in STEM majors and careers, and became committed to doing what she co

uld to make a difference in her own community - Project Scientist had lift off! Personally Sandy had experienced gender stereotyping and a lack of role models as she pursued a STEM major in college and as a result changed majors. As a mother of two young girls with a passion for science, Sandy remains committed to changing the status quo for her girls as well as girls across the country. The need for Project Scientist was based off a vast amount of research that shows girls with a high skill, aptitude, and talent for STEM subjects are not currently served or identified at a young age. Underserved and unidentified girls are not provided STEM opportunities at a pace, depth, and breadth commensurate with their talents and interests. We created Project Scientist to change the world’s view of “who” a scientist is and “what” a scientist does. The vision of Project Scientist is to transform the face of STEM by nurturing today’s future scientists who will lead the world in solving tomorrow's greatest challenges! Every second of a girl's time with Project Scientist is intentional and based off of the latest research of what drives and sustains girl's interest in STEM. We diligently set goals and track the outcomes, outcomes that research has proven to affect girls with an interest in STEM. Studies from Harvard Medical School, UNC Charlotte, and Lunaria have all praised Project Scientist's impact. Project Scientist has developed partnerships with top STEM companies, from Trane Technologies to Google Fiber. Throughout the year, our online, after-school STEM Club is giving girls the hands-on learning they love. Membership gives young scientists access to a virtual community of like-minded girls, monthly STEM kit, and live programming with a Project Scientist certified teacher. We know that 78% of school-aged girls have an interest in STEM, yet women only make up 25% of the STEM workforce, and that somewhere along the lines we are losing these STEM girls. We are determined to reach STEM girls and hold their hand through PhD or as long as far as their STEM dreams take them. Finally highlighting our girls through public relations and marketing efforts, our hope is to overall change society's perception of girl's interest and aptitude in STEM, in the end helping all girls.

Our students are the reason we do this work. 💜

So when we recently received this letter in the mail from one of our students, we were completely over the moon. Moments like these reinforce why creating opportunities for girls in STEM matters so deeply. To every volunteer, donor, educator, and supporter who gives their time, energy, and resources to Project Scientist—thank you. Every dollar donated and every hour volunteered helps empower bright young minds across the country!

Here’s the full message we received: “Dear Project Scientist,
I am a current high schooler and recently did a presentation on your nonprofit. I just wanted to thank everyone who contributes to this organization. I myself am very interested in STEM and seeing an organization that promotes young girls to pursue their passions in STEM means so much to me. This organization is encouraging young girls to explore their interests and is truly making a difference. I hope to volunteer in the future and contribute to this empowering cause. Keep making a difference!
– Anneliese”

Thank you, Anneliese. Seeing students like you grow and shine reminds us that the future is promising. ✨

Last week our students engaged in an incredible day at a Basketball & STEM Clinic presented by State Farm in partnership with the Project Scientist, Minnesota Lynx and Pack Off Court. Students got the chance to see how sports and STEM go hand in hand — combining teamwork, strategy, innovation, and leadership both on and off the court.

Huge thanks to Olivia Miles and Liatu King for inspiring the next generation to dream big, work hard, and lead with confidence! 🏀✨

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Genesys for making Team Day such an unforgettable experience! 💙 Throughout the session, students fully stepped into the roles of community designers, engineers, and problem-solvers as they worked to create sustainable and inclusive communities that support both people and the environment.

Genesys volunteers didn’t just guide students through interactive design checkpoints, they encouraged big thinking, teamwork, confidence, and curiosity every step of the way. You could see students lighting up as they shared ideas, solved challenges, and realized the impact their voices can have.

We’re so grateful to every volunteer who showed up, your time and energy made a lasting impact and helped inspire the next generation of changemakers. ✨

Mission accomplished: Our Explorers Club crew trained like astronauts, engineered like NASA innovators, and imagined what life on Mars could look like. From launching rockets and building rovers to designing colonies on the Red Planet, every challenge encouraged our explorers to think creatively, solve problems as a team, and dream bigger than ever before.

After an exciting few weeks of programming with our students across the country, we can safely report that the future of space exploration is BRIGHT… and it just might include our explorers. ✨

In case you missed it, our 2025 Annual Report is here!

Together in 2025, we achieved:
✨ 25,541 STEAM education experiences delivered
✨ 11,658 girls* reached through educator training
✨ 3,073 girls* served directly in our summer, after-school, and out-of-school programs
✨ 366 volunteers who showed up to support and inspire
✨ 153 educators trained in equitable teaching strategies

These numbers represent more than reach, they reflect confidence built, skills developed, and futures reimagined. This is a reflection of what’s possible when community, educators, and students come together to expand access and opportunity in STEAM.

"I get asked a lot about the "pipeline problem" in STEM.
My answer: there is no pipeline problem. There's a culture problem."

Girls aren't missing from science because they lack ability. They're missing because we've spent decades showing them a very specific image of who a scientist is, and it doesn't look like them.

That matters more now, not less. As AI reshapes every field, the students who'll thrive are the ones who believe they belong in the room. Confidence, identity, and a sense of possibility — those are AI readiness skills too.

Our CEO, Dr. Patrice S. Johnson, sat down with Alex Kotran on AiEDU's podcast to talk about why belonging isn't a "nice to have" in STEM education. It's the whole game.

This Mother's Day, we're celebrating all the working moms and are thrilled to highlight one of our own 💐

One of our team members recently shared her journey through parental leave, motherhood, and returning to work as a changed person. Her words stopped us in our tracks:

"I was fortunate enough to come back to a team who allowed me the space for my whole self, not just the version they had worked with before."

That's the culture we strive to build at Project Scientist — one where growth doesn't pause at the office door, and where life's biggest transitions are met with support, not pressure to snap back.

But we'll be honest: we know there's still more work to do. Longer leave. More equitable support for all parents, regardless of gender. Stronger structures that make it easier for every team member to return as their full, evolved self. As organizations across the country scale back parental leave benefits, we're doubling down on our commitment to the humans behind the work.

Because the best gift we can give working mothers isn't a card — it's a workplace that sees them whole.

The past few months have been full of collaboration, innovation, and impact—here’s a look at what’s been going on!

Last month, alongside the Angel C. Reese Foundation, 2K Foundations, and the Living Classrooms Foundation, female student-athletes joined our “ME Bound: The Science Behind Rebounds” workshop led by Angel Reese.

In 2025, we delivered 25,541 STEAM education experiences, reaching 3,073 girls through summer, after-school, and out-of-school programs. Supported by 266 volunteers and 153 educators trained in equitable teaching strategies, we’re expanding access, confidence, and opportunity in STEAM for the next generation.

Last month, we had a blast hosting a Team Day with Alcon, where students explored creativity and technology through hands-on STEM activities. Huge thanks to the Alcon team and the Women Innovating Now employee resource group for making the day so impactful—and if you’d like to get involved, join a future Team Day or volunteer with us!
