Chhahari, Inc.

Chhahari, Inc. As of March 2020, its home-hostel environment is defunct due to COVID-19. Updates TBD.

Chhahari ("shelter" in Nepali) financially supports the health, safety, and educational needs of poor and underserved children of Nepal, with an emphasis on education. Chhahari was founded in 2007 by Christine Casey of Laguna Beach, California. After a 2004 trek to Nepal, she returned home with an intense desire to help the hungry, sick, abandoned children she had seen begging in the streets. Chha

hari (“shelter” in Nepali) was a children’s home in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal that cared for up to 25 village youngsters whose parents had died, disappeared, or were too poor or ill to feed and educate them. They were fed, clothed, cared for medically, and educated in a loving, family-home environment. The home-hostel environment was dismantled in March 2020 due to government restrictions concerning the COVID-19 lockdown. The children were sent to their home villages to live with relatives; some of the older ones have moved in with siblings or married. We continue to attempt to follow their movements as best we can to ensure they are being adequately cared for and they can complete their educations. If you want to help the children of Nepal right now, we refer you to other NGOs that have in-country personnel such as CDO Nepal and Impact Schools.

Chhahari, Inc. USA's dear friends Arati and Pradeep, along with their two children Pratik and Niva, have been put to the test during the latest surge in COVID cases in Nepal. Their organization CDO is struggling as are many NGO's who care for the poor. But, babies continue to be born and education for them in some form must go on. Please see www.cdonepal.org.

Great Chhahari News!!!

Chhahari brother, Anjan Rana Magar, has once again “nailed it.” He and his three teammates participated in the annual “UCI New Venture Competition” and won a $7,500 prize. Anjan’s team won in the category of Social Enterprise for their start-up company “Circular” which provides a food waste collection service to restaurants. Restaurant food waste is collected then composted using worms. The composted material is then used as fertilizer for organic produce which is then distributed back to partner restaurants.

Many congratulations to Anjan and his “Circular” teammates. Here are a few photos of the “zoomed” competition conducted on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

Anup Parajuli

Anup is the eldest son of Kumar and Uma Parajuli who for 12 years (2008-2020) provided loving parental care to all the children who came through the gates of Chhahari's hostel in Kathmandu, Nepal. He is also the older brother of Sabin.

Anup completed Class 12 at Reliance College and is awaiting final exams. Unfortunately, for the time being all exams have been delayed due to another country-wide lockdown caused by COVID-19.

The link below takes you to the Reliance College newspaper. Anup's poem is published on page 6.

When it comes to Chhahari Inc. USA, we are all about educating and caring for impoverished Nepalese children. With the pandemic, the unexpected closure of our hostel in Kathmandu and the continued countrywide lockdown, our efforts have been thwarted. However, we remain fiercely committed to our cause and recently gifted a $5,000 donation to Impact Schools, Inc. The non-profit organization shares our mission and used the funds to purchase a 600 square-meter plot of land for subsistence farming near its hostel and school for disadvantaged youth, in a very remote village of the Himalayas. Residents of Impact School’s home and school will now have the ability to grow their own food. Access to food, especially vegetables, is often a challenge, but even more so with the lockdown.

As Chhahari Inc. USA waits for the country to open up again, we are grateful for organizations like Impact Schools, who continue to provide "boots on the ground.” Here are some photos of the land and the villagers preparing for planting. Chhahari Inc. USA can’t wait to get our "boots on the ground” in Nepal again soon.

It is with utmost adoration and pride that we announce Chhahari star Anjan Rana Magar’s continuing success at SOKA University. Still on the Dean’s list (2nd year in a row) even while enduring the challenges of our world wide pandemic. Bravo dear Anjan!!! Keep up the amazing work.

More from Christine Casey:

In the days following the April 25, 2015 earthquake in Nepal, our Chhahari boys stepped up to help Kumar install canvas tents to shield our Chhahari family from the daytime sun and the nighttime rain. They also devised a plan to form a sand/mud diversion channel for the rainwater to flow towards the road which helped keep our outdoor sleeping mats dry.

The boys calculated the number of days we had on hand before our cooking gas and food supplies ran out. During the day we all went on scouting parties to nearby shops looking for and buying water, noodles and paracetamol—water being the next most critical item after rice and dal!

The successful outcome of this catastrophic situation was completely due to a team effort. One I know none of us will ever forget!

Many thanks to all our boys. Now very much young men.

NEPAL’S 2015 EARTHQUAKE
SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2015 AT 11:57 AM

Memories from the President and Founder of Chhahari, Inc. USA, Christine Casey:

The photos and link below tell this story. Imagine in your mind’s eye the horror of that day! Then, living, eating and sleeping outdoors for several weeks!

A special thanks to Kumar and Uma Parajuli, our Chhahari house Father and Mother, for their ability to stay calm for our children, along with being able to follow all difficult and tiring directions during the days and weeks after this earthquake and through the many aftershocks that followed.

Also, a big thanks to Chhatramani and Sushila Niraula who, in the absence of Toya and Ranju Niraula (out of the country and in India caring for their daughter), made the difficult walk across the city regularly to visit our children.

I would also like to mention many visits from Mr. Raghab Sharma who at the time was the Principal of Sagarmatha Educational Academy, our children’s school.

As a Californian, I knew to some extent what I was dealing with but no one could be prepared for the extent of an earthquake of this magnitude!

A much-cherished photo of our Chhahari children and their hostel mom and dad, Uma and Kumar taken in March 2020. Soon thereafter, our successful home for disadvantaged youth for over 11 years was suddenly and tragically closed by Chhahari Organization Nepal. Fortunately, we’ve been able to conduct periodic welfare checks on all but one of our girls. The children were sent back to the villages where they had come from and have had no access to school as the Nepalese Government put the entire country on lockdown. Once schools open up, Chhahari, Inc U.S.A. is ready to wire funds to every school principal in each child’s village for each of our beloved little ones to pay for tuition, uniforms, and supplies. We will continue our efforts to contact Regina to fulfill our promise for her education as we move forward. Later this year, Chhahari Inc. U.S.A. intends to launch its next educational project/program in Nepal. Details are pending but we’re ready to run with our heartfelt commitment and passion as soon as the government gives the green light. Stay tuned for news on our future adventures. Namaste 🙏

Another shining star from our Chhahari Inc. home for impoverished children in Kathmandu. Here is our very cherished Keshari Bista in her brand new college uniform. We were so blessed to have her under our roof for 10 years where we could enjoy her beautiful smile on a daily basis, provide a quality education, and keep her safe, happy and healthy. She is flourishing. We are pleased to report that Keshari is studying diligently for her 4-year Bachelor of Business Science degree at the Reliance College in Kathmandu. We love her and are so proud to see her grow into such a smart and strong young lady. And, today is her birthday! Happy birthday darling Keshari!
