As the summer crowds start returning to school, we wanted to take a moment and say THANK YOU to everyone who visited the tidepools, respectfully explored, and talked to our tidepool biologists, volunteers, and interns. 💙
Summer is our busiest time of year, with hundreds of visitors joining us at the tidepools each day. We love talking to everyone about the wonders of the tidepools, why we work so hard to keep these areas protected, and how we can inspire future generations to do the same. 🌊

Happy 🐌 snail Saturday! This week we are highlighting the beautiful coffee bean trivia. These small snails have shells with 12 long spiral ribs running across. They are a dark purple color, reaching around half an inch in length. These snails feed on compound tunicates found within the intertidal zone. The coloration of the snail itself is often orangish to yellowish brown and can cover most of the shell. Have you ever found one of these beautiful snails?

This week we will have tidepool biologists at the tidepools every day this week! Our staff are at the tidepools during low tide to educate visitors about different species they may find while exploring, share the rules about the Marine Protected Area to prevent any violations, and help protect the ecosystem from any potential human impacts.

We hope to see you out there at the tidepools with our biologists. They are a wealth of knowledge and there to answer your questions, help you find things, and explore responsibly. 🌊

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 19th and join us alongside for California Coastal Cleanup Day! We will be at Aliso Beach from 9am- 12pm cleaning up the beach with our community. Join us and be part of the movement!

CA Coastal Cleanup Day is California's largest annual volunteer event. Volunteers pick up trash/debris at CA coasts and inland waterways and record what they find such as plastic bags, straws, bottles, etc. Every piece of trash picked up is recorded and tracked for communities and policymakers to understand what's polluting the waterways and coastline. The data has helped lead to action such as efforts to reduce single-use plastics. Art credit to Phyllis Shafer.

Happy 🐌 snail Saturday! This week we are highlighting our most commonly found snail species, the black turban snail. Their shells get to around one inch, and they weigh up to 20 grams. Any guesses as to how long these snails live? Wait until the end to find the answer. 👀 These snails feed on mostly macroscopic algae and rock encrusting algae. Their predators include sea stars, crabs, octopus, and birds.
If you guessed that black turban snails can live up to 30 years - you were correct!
Bonus fact - when these snails die, hermit crabs will often use their empty shells as their new homes! 🦀

Join us for our upcoming volunteer orientation! You are invited to join us from 2-6pm on Sunday, September 13th. 🌊
Our volunteer docents are the backbone of the Laguna Ocean Foundation, and we would love to have you join our team! Volunteering with us is both rewarding and enjoyable, offering endless opportunities to learn something new about our tidepools every shift. You'll have the chance to observe incredible tidepool organisms, marine mammals, and seabirds while connecting with visitors from all walks of life. As a docent, you'll play an important role in educating the public about the unique coastal ecosystem and the Marine Protected Area (MPA) regulations that help preserve it for future generations.

Happy 🐌 snail Saturday! Today we are highlighting the California cone snail. This is our only venomous cone snail native to our waters. Growing to around 1.5 inches, they feed by scavenging for marine worms, mollusks, and even small fish. They use a specialized radula (tooth) that acts like a harpoon to inject neurotoxins to paralyze their prey. These snails should be admired with your eyes and cameras only, even if you are not in an MPA like ours.
How cool is this snail?! Did you know we have a venomous snail species in our tidepools? 🐌
