This March GOAL plans to visit Uganda with a focus on helping young women better understand and manage menstruation. Menstrual hygiene and management is a topic largely ignored by organizations and professionals in the water, health and education sectors. Our objective is to educate and provide the girls attending the Buhoma Community school with reusable sanitary products that will get them through a full year of schooling without having to miss days due to their periods. In Uganda, a supply of sanitary pads for a single girl costs one tenth of the family income and is a luxury the majority of families cannot afford. As a result, the impact of menstruation results in over 60% of puberty age female pupils missing 11% of the school year. Additionally, 40% of female teachers also absent themselves from teaching due to lack of adequate menstruation management supplies. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon in rural areas for classes to be entirely canceled when a female teacher gets her period. If female students and teachers do not share the same cycle time frame as is often the case, the combined effect is young girls missing 22% of the school year due to menstruation management conflicts alone. Imagine missing nearly one quarter of the school year as a student because of your period? Managing menstruation can be a life-restricting monthly nightmare for women and girls in Uganda. Help us make a difference. Your contribution will provide the gift of education, sanitation and health. Please join us in being a part of disrupting poverty and donate now. www.theglobalgoal.org
