Black River Astronomical Society

Black River Astronomical Society Serving amateur astronomers in North Central Ohio since 1949. We also like to help new astronomers with equipment use and observing instruction and hints.

Regular meetings are the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm, usually at the Lorain County Metroparks Carlisle Visitor Center. Meetings include coverage of current observing opportunities, a constellation of the month, and a program of astronomical interest. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. We also host night time observing sessions at the John D. Nielsen Observatory at the so

uthern entrance of the Carlisle Reservation, just south of the Equestrian Center. See our web page for our latest calendar of events.

We had a great time at last night's Public Observing at the Neilson Observatory. We saw Jupiter, Venus, some galaxies like M104 and M81, and many clusters like M13, M92, and M6 the Butterfly Cluster. It was a beautiful night. If you talked to Jude who was taking pictures with his telescope, you only saw stars on his tablet, but here is the image he captured after 90 minutes of exposures. The Blue Horsehead Nebula in Scorpius. Hope to see everyone next time.

We are OPEN for Public Observing tonight, Friday June 12th from 10:00-12:00 midnight at the Nielsen Observatory. Join us to see giant Jupiter with its four moons as well as galaxies, nebulae and colorful double stars through our large telescopes. This event is free, no registration required and open to all.
Please park in the lot to the right and walk over to the observatory buildings. Parking beside the buildings is restricted to people unloading telescopes and equipment and folks with mobility issues. Please watch for deer on the drive in. We hope to see you tonight!

There is the possibility of aurora tonight. Keep an eye on the northern sky from a dark area if possible. There is no specific time.

Looks like last night was a good night to go after Clusters. Here is Messier 23, an open cluster in Sagittarius. This cluster is easily visible with binoculars or a small telescope, especially this summer.

The large globular cluster M13 in Hercules can show a dark "propeller" under some circumstances. It might also look like the letter Y. This was taken with the Seestar last night under bright moonlight. The nearby 11th magnitude galaxy NGC 6207 is at left.
