Big, big thanks to Wallenius Wilhelmsen staff for improving our downtown Wabash Riverfront for ! Ten staff members got to it managing invasive plants along the Wabash River. Invasive plants degrade ecosystem health and contribute to erosion. Erosion adds sediment and nutrients to the Wabash River. That sediment and nutrient pollution eventually ends up in the Gulf of Mexico, contributing to the dead zone and damaging ocean health. What we do on our properties impacts the whole water system. Thanks to Wallenius Wilhelsen for their help in improving our local river!

It's that time again! If you have bloodroot, check for seeds! Spread them on the ground where you want them to grow, don't try to save them for for sowing later.

There's two more local sources for native plants! This weekend the local chapter of the Native Plant Society will have their annual sidewalk sale. They usually have cool, shade-loving plants that are hard to find elsewhere, and great prices! They will be at 844 Rose St, WL this Saturday and Sunday.

A local landscaper is selling native plants they grew themselves! Contact Nick at Agrestal Gardens to see what's available and learn the prices.

The blooms this time of year include lots of cool blues and purples. Perfect for cool, rainy day vibes. We're seeing lots of wild geranium, great waterleaf, and woodland phlox blooming now. Do you have any great shots of these in your yard?

hit the riverfront honeysuckle HARD this past Sunday. They fought grapevines and riprap to cut, treat, and drag honeysuckle off the banks of the Wabash River right next to the pedestrian bridge. Big Thanks for their hard work!

We do a lot of our seed collecting in the fall, but some spring blooms mean that seeds are starting to be ready now! Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are wrapping up their blooms now, and starting to go to seed. They only have 4 seeds per flower, and these seeds are easy to see.

Once they turn dark brown, then they're ready to fall out. Keep a close eye on them so you can collect the seeds as they turn brown. Some people are able to collect the stem of the seed head just before the seeds are ready, and let them dry in a paper bag so the seeds are not lost. Others put a small mesh bag over the seed head so the seeds drop in to the bag and are not lost. Whatever method you use, you have to pay attention to when the flowers are done blooming and when the seeds start to ripen. Most people say that it's best to direct sow the seeds in to the ground as soon as they are collected and ripened.

We still have funding to help pay for septic repair and maintenance costs this year! This is for septic systems in Tippecanoe County. A functioning septic tanks keeps human waste (nutrients and bacteria!) out of our streams and rivers. Just like our regular cost share program, you must apply and be approved before you have the work done. This program can help with inspections, pumping, and repairs.
