DAV Lafayette, La Chapter 2

DAV Lafayette, La Chapter 2 We help them submit claims for disabilities incurred during their service to this nation. Our meetings are on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 1800 hours.

We are a non-profit organization, located in Lafayette, La., that provides service to veterans locally to aid in their receiving the benefits they are eligible for. We provide transportation to Alexandria, La., for appointments at the VA Hospital. We also help grieving widows/widowers of veterans to get the benefits they may qualify for upon the death of their spouse. We encourage all veterans to

attend these meetings so that 1. you can find out what your eligibilities are and 2. you can meet other veterans for comradeship and friendship.

Commander's Lunch 2/20/26

Our chapter enjoyed our monthly luncheon at Tim's Kitchen in Broussard. Present were: Ken Gove (Chapter 2 Commander) and wife Shara, Marlene Comeaux (Unit 2 Commander), Jerri Rambin
(Unit 2 Sr. Vice Commander), Phillis Bertrand (Unit 2 Treasurer), Phyllis Barnett (Unit 2 Adjutant), Karen Mamalakis (VSO), Marinus Manning-DAV Member, Corinne Manning-DAVA Member, Gloria Cross-DAVA Member, Joseph Roseberry-DAV Member, and Denise Young-DAVA Member. We had a spectacular lunch with friendship and camaraderie prevailing. We look forward to having more members joining us for these luncheons on the 3rd Friday of the month. Due to the golf tournament in Gretna in March, we will be having our lunch on the 2nd Friday (March 13, 2026).

02/14/2026

On February 7, 2026, our chapter was at Golden Corral helping to collect funds for Golden Corral to send the kids of wounded, ill, and deceased veterans to Camp Corral, which is summer camp. These kids are going through a lot in their lives trying to help their sick and disabled veteran parents. For the ones that have parents that have become deceased, they are still going through the grievance of their lost parent. This camp helps them to get their minds off of the stress their situation causes and helps them to be able to cope with life. We collected $1056.00 in that single day, and we are proud that we could help Golden Corral to help the kids. We are planning to hold another event on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Golden Corral in Lafayette, Louisiana so that we can help even more.

I would like to thank the members of DAV Chapter 2 and DAVA Unit 2 that helped in this endeavor. These members are:

DAV
Ken Gove-Chapter Commander, Nolan Onezime-Sr. vice Commander, Mance Savoie-Sergeant-at Arms, Michelle Santos, George Breaux, George Buchanon, and Clint Rambo

DAVA
Marlene Comeaux-Unit Commander, Phyllis Barnett-Adjutant, Shara Gove, Gloria cross, and Anna Breaux.

A lifelong area resident, Kirby was born on Weeks Island, on October 9, 1944, to the late Donald and Georgette Hebert. Kirby graduated from New Iberia High School in 1962 during which time he earned his Eagle Scout Award. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1962 until 1968 and earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal while serving in the Dominican Republic Area. Gracie; we were saddened to hear of Kirby’s passing! We always looked forward to the Nantahala Reunions to trade old memories of our time together aboard ship! Also always looked forward to reunion ending “auction” at the banquet with Kirby officiating! Very entertaining!
Kirby was such an energetic and authentic guy! We always enjoyed hanging out with you and Kirby! Never a dull moment with Kirby! And you guys could really burn up the dance floor!
We have missed you guys at the last several or so reunions! Pretty dull without you!
We will always cherish the wonderful times we had together at the reunions! And I will always remember Kirby modeling that pretty little blue bikini when we were in Cannes, France!
You take care Gracie! We love you!

The members of the chapter and the auxiliary unit have been working hard in the recruiting efforts to enable us to bring more people into the chapter and the unit. Today, I was looking through all of the pictures we have posted on our site. I see a lot of fun, camaraderie, friendship, and esprit de corps. This is what the DAV Lafayette Chapter 2 is all about. We learn a lot from our meetings, conferences, and conventions, and we have fun after the training is over. We have built a great chapter/unit, and we strive to help veterans when needed. Our organization has never been stronger than it is now, and it grows stronger with the passing days. We communicate and we give and receive suggestions for things to come. If any disabled veterans want to know about an organization that is there to help them, kindly reach out to them and bring them in so that we may try to enrich their lives, by receiving the benefits they are entitled to. This is all happening because of the great people we have in our organization. Marlene Comeaux, Auxiliary Commander and I work together to strive for excellence in our organization. We will continue to work together and bring younger people into the chapter/ unit so that we can gain more invigorative ideas to help the organization grow. Please breeze through the pictures that are posted so that you can see how far we have come. To all of our members, please get the work out to bring these veterans in so they can get our help. I want all of you to know that I am proud of the efforts that you have been displaying, and I am proud to have each and every one of you as members of the chapter /unit. May you all have a great Christmas and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. See you at the Christmas dinner on December 2nd.

Well, we just completed our Midwinter Conference in Alexandria, La. We learned a lot, especially me, about the auxiliary and their programs. As Commander, I need to know this because it helps me to coordinate better with the Commander of the Auxiliary, so that we have a cohesive chapter/unit. I would like to thank Kathy Wenthe and Nicole Wenthe for the training we received. They were very professional and informative in the instruction. Those that attended, Marlene Comeaux-Auxiliary Commander, Phyllis Barnett-Aux Adjutant, Brian Michaud-Aux member, Shara Gove-Aux member, Anna Breaux-Aux member, George Breaux-DAV member, Emily Onezime-Auxiliary member, Nolan Onezime-DAV Chapter Sr. Vice Commander, Stephanie Scott-DAV Chapter 2 Adjutant, and me, Ken Gove-DAV Chapter 2 Commander, were all enlightened to the programs and will surely use this information to help to ensure readiness in our chapter/unit. The next thing on our agenda is the DAV Chapter Christmas Dinner on December 2nd. We will join in friendship and camaraderie to secure the blessings of the Christmas spirit. We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year.

I would like to take this moment as Commander of DAV Lafayette Chapter 2 to thank all of the veterans for their brave and diligent service to our nation. Without the veterans, this nation would not exist as a free world, ensuring liberties and freedoms for the American people. We speak American English and not German or Russian, because of the veterans. Communism and Socialism in America was and is deterred because of the veterans. I am writing this in honor of all veterans, Past, Present, and Future.
I render a hand salute to all American Veterans!!!!! Thank you all for your service.

Yesterday and today we share d some moments with several veterans that came in to Golden Corral. We spoke with some of them about their benefits they could qualify for and we collected some donations. The Department Commander, Al Leger and his wife, Liz, and son Chris, joined us for dinner and some fun times. We will be back there Tuesday night to talk with veterans as they come in to receive a free dinner from Golden Corral. Looking forward to this time, which starts at 1600 (4:00 pm).
