The club had a jam-packed day with a diverse group of visitors, the 6910 District Governor Jessica Fleetwood, our Area 17 District Assistant Governor Jimmie Gentry, and 3 of 4 Club scholarship winners.

Jimmie (sport coat) introduced Jessica (gray top) describing her Rotary journey from the West End Cartersville Etowah Club to her current position. She gave an update on the Rotary International and its nonprofit Rotary Foundation, and expanded on this year’s theme “Unite for Good”, meaning our Club should work with other groups in LaFayette to help meet the
needs of the community. She asked each Activity Chair to provide examples of what we had done in that area this year.

Each scholarship recipient was awarded a $1,000 check. Shown left to right are: Zach Reynolds (LHS Counselor), Daniel Rivera, Avery Bowling, and Elie Baxter. The 4th recipient, Addison Cagle, was unable to attend.

Club President Julie Carter (green top) thanked Jessica for her support and presented her with a jar of honey, a symbol of our annual Honeybee Festival.

Rotarian Jeremy Staton welcomed Dr. Aaron Ford, owner of Ford Chiropractic, who spoke about Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) now being offered in his practice. Information provided below was summarized from the office pamphlet “Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy”:

A person’s blood contains three major components: White blood cells (healing and secretion of growth factors), red blood cells (keep tissue alive by providing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide), and platelets (first response to injuries, using multiple growth factors and proteins to activate the healing process).

Platelets store a vast amount of growth factors which are released to the injury site. The platelets signal for other healing factors to be drawn to the site. PRP focuses a large dose of platelets directly at the site, enhancing the body’s response to acute, chronic, or inflammatory conditions.

A concentrated solution containing platelets is made by separating drawn blood into speciaizedl tubes, removing the platelet-rich liquid, adding a small amount of blood plasma, The mixture is then injected it into the affected site. Use of PRP therapy with high-level athletes has helped then avoid surgery and reduced recovery time, The platelets are mixed with a small amount of blood plasma.

Typical applications areas include foot/ankle, spine, knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow/wrist/hand. Contact Dr. Ford for more specific information, an evaluation as to the appropriateness of PRP in your case, and the actual therapy itself.

Rotarian Carl Spinks introduced three representatives of the LHS Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter: 2026-27 President Terra Southerland [L] and staff teachers/advisors Samantha Hill {C} and Michael Gardner {R}. Michael and Samantha first spoke about FFA and LHS programs. Nationally, there are 800,000 members, with Georgia having the third highest membership of 80,000 in its 400 chapters and the LHS chapter, 300.

Events are divided into two categories, Career Development (Animals, Forestry, Ag Mechanical, and Horticultural areas) and Leadership Development. Michael focused on livestock, with animals (goats, lambs, cattle, rabbits, chickens, and horses) raised at home or in the Ag Barn on campus and then entered into show competitions. Samantha described the Forestry Field Day Team Competition in which members demonstrate their skills in many aspects of forest production and tree knowledge/care.

Terra spoke about her own farming and FFA experiences. She works at a Boer goat farm where she has gained hands-on experience with goat raising and care. Highlights of her FFA experience include LHS Chapter leadership, livestock judging, horse evaluation, and public speaking.

The chapter and its members have earned many awards and other recognition at the area, state, and national levels including being named as a Gold Chapter for this year’s award for being in the top 10% in the state.

Fun Fact: Boer goats are excellent climbers, adept at navigating rocky terrains.

Rotarian Craig Smith (L) welcomed Steve Wilson (R), Walker County Sheriff. who recently achieved a milestone of public service: 40 years with the Sheriff’s Office. Steve delved into the tumultuous history of the Walker County Courthouse, now in its 4th version: fire in 1885, relocation from the square, inter-county squabbling judges, commissioner contempt citations and arrests, and Supreme Court interventions. The current building was built in 1917, dedicated in 1918 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. For those who love buildings, the Courthouse was designed in the Beaux Arts/Renaissance Revival style, taught in Paris from the 1830s through 1899 but employed into the early 20th century for institutional and government buildings. Major exterior restoration were begun in 2024, with environmental remediation underway this year.

Fun Fact: Walker County will celebrate its 200th Anniversary in 2033.

Rotarian and Club President Julie Carter provided this week’s program, discussing two important Club award programs: Laws of Life and the Cobb-Rhyne Scholarships.

Laws of Life is a Georgia Rotary character-based essay contest. A Law of Life is a short saying or quotation that points to a core personal value or ideal. Often, a Law of Life serves as a memorable compass on a person’s journey through life. LHS uses essay writing as an effective, cost-free character education program. Over 28,000 students across the state entered this year. Of those submitted, grade and school winners were selected earning these students cash awards and honorariums.

Rotary Club LaFayette is pleased to continue our long-standing tradition of supporting education through the awarding of scholarships via the Cobb-Rhyne Scholarship and Education Fund, a matching grant from District 6910, and local fundraising. Following panel interviews, four LHS students were each selected to receive one-thousand-dollar scholarships.

Rotary Club LaFayette demonstrated that we are “People of Action” by staffing a Rest Stop at Saturday’s Honeybee Bike Ride. Proceeds from the Ride’s registration cost help make the registration fees for the Rec Center’s various sports activities more affordable.

Pictured below is our Rest Stop in front of the Rec Center and four of the Club Members who provided food and supplies, encouraged riders as they left on one of three routes, welcomed them back, and set up and took down the Stop. Pictured from left to right are Henry Gilbert, Josh Chapman, Craig Smith, and Keith Ingram. Also helping were Chaed Clemmons, Dan Hudson, Julie Carter, and Sallie McGinnis.
