Colossians 2:8 offers valuable insights when comparing worldly views of addiction to biblical teachings.
• Personal Responsibility: The verse reminds us that we are accountable for our actions. Addiction is not merely a disease; it is a choice we make. Furthermore, we must be cautious not to allow ourselves to be handcuffed or constrained by unbiblical methods.
• Philosophies of the World: Did you know that 12-step programs have a success rate of less than 7%? Is sobriety all that we need?
• Mark 8:36, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" This tells us there is more to life than being sober. We are to be eternally focused and find freedom.
• Empty Promises: The world's offerings often come with hollow promises. The reality is that true change may seem unattainable, leading to the conclusion that the best option is simply to medicate individuals.
• Human Tradition: In 1956, the American Medical Association redefined addiction as a disease, moving away from the traditional understanding of it as a moral failing or personal weakness.
• Spiritual Perspectives: The 12-step program is often characterized as a “spiritual program,” rooted in the elemental spirits of the world.
• Christ’s Truth: In contrast, we find hope and freedom in John 8:36: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
