When describing her gator and its meaning, artist Kali Picard said, “The alligator is a natural symbol of strength and agility. Yet true strength is not merely physical, it requires a mind that is steady, disciplined, and calm. Nuit Bleu embodies Ascension’s fortitude in both body and spirit. Celebrating the school’s commitment to athletics, character formation, and academic excellence, the nighttime swamp setting is intentional and symbolic. The color blue evokes calmness and clarity, suggesting a mind at peace even in the midst of challenge. The night is not rendered in darkness alone; the moon’s light breaks through, symbolizing the presence of God even in moments of uncertainty and adversity. Like life itself, the swamp is a wild and unpredictable place. Its ecosystem reminds us that while some forces are beyond our control, we are still called to respond with courage, responsibility, and purposeful action where we do have influence. The egret was chosen as a reflection of the spirit of the Serenity Prayer. Graceful and composed, it represents the virtues our students strive to cultivate, gentleness, generosity, truthfulness, kindness, and bravery. Together, the alligator and the egret reflect the balance Ascension seeks to form in its students: strength guided by wisdom, and courage tempered by grace.”

This gator was created using “a camera-less technique that involves coating the surface with a chemical solution and then exposing it to UV light, leaving the impression of the objects placed on top of the surface. This slow reacting photo process is called cyanotype.” Cyan-O-Gator’s artist is Ascension art teacher Jeni Guidry!
