The ISAD Online Conference Call for Papers is Open! 😃 Submissions will be accepted until 31 August 2024.
This year’s theme is The Power Of Listening. People who stutter have the unique opportunity to teach the world to listen. And to educate on the importance of listening, being 90% of effective communication. Listening helps us build trust, and better understand other people’s situations and feelings. We all want to be heard and feel validated, getting full attention. But also SLPs, parents and other allies need to be listened to.
What are your thoughts on this year's theme ā€œThe Power Of Listeningā€?

Please submit personal stories, professional papers, research findings, creative endeavors, videos and more, to share with a world who loves, supports, and is dedicated to learning about stuttering.
See the ISAD Online Conference website (new link!) for more information on the theme, how to submit a paper and how to participate in the conference.
And please SHARE the call for papers and follow this FB site, as here is where ongoing news is being announced and all the papers will be highlighted.

The logo is ready to use, the website is updated, so the only thing missing is your submissions. :-)

Kids and teens, what advice do you have for parents, siblings, teachers and friends and how do you want people to listen to you?

What does The Power of Listening mean to you? Write or record something, use audio and/or video, share research and presentations, submit drawings, song, poems and other creativity.

In light of recent events, some have chosen to stay silent. Let's explore a potential reason and call for statements from all Stuttering Organizations.

Let’s continue to make informed choices instead of being afraid. People who stutter deserve to know the leaders in the stuttering community have their backs.

Meet Marie Vicale, BFA, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked Marie how she became interested in working with people who stutter:

"I was first introduced to the stuttering community through my work as a teaching artist for SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young. I was an actor at the time, but I was so struck by the community of this group and by the amazing stories and assertive communication of the kids I was working with, that it inspired me to go back to school to become a speech-language pathologist. I hoped to one day focus on working with kids and adults who stutter. It is truly a dream come true that I get to do that today!"

What does the Spero Ally of Stutteringā„¢ Seal mean to Marie?

"I hope that having the Ally of Stuttering Seal will help demonstrate to the stuttering community and/or prospective clients that I am, indeed, an ally! I am passionate about this work, committed to supporting this population in evidence-based, client-centered ways, and have prioritized ongoing learning about stuttering to help my clients succeed in whatever way is most meaningful to them."

ā€œConcern for the struggles of disabled people is not ableism. However, the refusal to see the value in neurodiversity and the insistence that normalization is the only solution to impairment certainly is.ā€

– Gerlach-Houck & Constantino, 2022

Hey guys! Let's talk ableism in the definition of stuttering.

For way too long, stuttering has been defined by people who do not stutter, listeners, and other people's perspectives and beliefs about what a stutter is. How about we listen to the people who stutter?

This post dives into the definition of stuttering as defined by PWS, as well as a self-check for SLPs to make sure they aren't perpetuating ableism in their practice by reinforcing fluency.

This outside-in approach to the definition of stuttering lacks validation and acceptance from people who stutter and people who live the experience of stuttering.
