NAMI West Central Indiana

NAMI West Central Indiana We provide mental health education, advocacy, and support to our community. We advocate. We listen. We lead.

About NAMI

Who We Are

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association

of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. What We Do

NAMI relies on gifts and contributions to support our important work:

We educate. Offered in thousands of communities across the United States through NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates, our education programs ensure hundreds of thousands of families, individuals and educators get the support and information they need. NAMI shapes national public policy for people with mental illness and their families and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to save mental health in all states. Our toll-free NAMI HelpLine allows us to respond personally to hundreds of thousands of requests each year, providing free referral, information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many. Public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks, successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding. NAMI works with reporters on a daily basis to make sure our country understands how important mental health is. (Taken from https://www.nami.org/About-NAMI which is the National Page)

For September, our Sticker Lover Club is paying homage to a vibrant and iconic artist: Frida Kahlo. 🎨🖌️

September 15th marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating Kahlo’s legacy and her deep connection to her culture.

Kahlo used art as a form of expression while living with chronic pain caused by traumatic injuries during her life. She experienced some difficult periods of emotional and mental health struggles, which can be seen woven throughout her work and the imagery she created.

We hope you enjoy this month’s sticker and feel inspired by Kahlo’s ability to turn pain, identity, and personal experience into powerful pieces of art. 🖼️

We were so happy to have Purdue Athletics Sports Clinician, Brittni Oliver, as our presenter for “NAMI Talks: Mental Health in Sports” last night at McCutcheon High School. 💙💚

Brittni talked to us about the different pressures that athletes face and how they can weigh a student-athlete down, causing negative performance in both academics and athletics. 🏀📚

She shared strategies to lessen that weight and inspired hope by sharing how successful universities like Purdue are at aiding student-athletes in pursuing both paths. 📓🏑

Thank you to everyone who came out to this event. Thank you so much to Brittni for presenting and special thank you to Tippecanoe County School Corporations’s Mental Health Liaison, Megan Ulrich, for helping to coordinate the event. 🫶
