Every plastic bag placed in curbside collection or traditional recycling drop-offs becomes waste. They may contaminate other items and usually become entangled on sorting equipment. Avoid them when possible and recycle properly at designated retail collection boxes. They can only be recovered and recycled if clean.

The vast majority of clothing is imported, and most is made from plastic, causing pollution throughout the production and use lifecycle. Choosing natural fibers, such as cotton, silk, h**p and bamboo when possible and purchasing recycled content or used items, as well as donating all types of cloth, including items in poor condition is better than landfilling or incinerating them.

We use electronic devices everyday, sometimes multiple devices at once! When they break or become obsolete, we need to find a collection site to recycle them. Each device contains metals and plastics that can be made into new products. Please check locally and save these resources.

Recycling is important but waste reduction has more impact. Be sure to make use of durable, dishwasher safe beverage bottles that you can refill and use for years instead of using single-use plastic bottles. When you do recycle plastic bottles, tubs and jugs, step on them if possible and then put the cap back on!

Each of us uses aluminum products, from beverage cans to car parts and some HVAC equipment. We need to recycle all of it because the base material, bauxite, is imported and energy intensive to process. Remember that small items will drop through sorting conveyor systems, so ball up foil with foil wrappers inside. Also, aluminum is melted at 3,000 degrees Fereheit so used bakeware is acceptable.

Glass is infinitely recyclable when it is recovered instead of landfilled or incinerated. Some areas have access to glass manufacturers and fiberglass manufacturers but for areas too far from those facilities, glass can be made into road aggregate. Construction and Demolition recyclers might be able to recover window glass but it should never be placed in curbside or traditional recycling.

Recycling one ton of paper (2,000 lbs or 39 boxes of copy paper) saves 17 trees. Recycle all paper through your curbside or drop-off locations. Tear confidential paper, placing one half in a separate paper bag if concerned about someone getting into your collection cart. Once taken, the paper is mixed, sorted under camera surveillance, mostly by machine, and sent to be washed and made into new paper products.
