June: Sharon LaCour will speak on Point of View

At next month’s WGA meeting on June 30th author Sharon LaCour will give a presentation on Point of View (POV). Born and raised in New Orleans, Sharon writes about the deep south, the human need to create, and about the complicated relationships that people tend to form. Her debut novel released in 2024, The Meeting of Air and Water, is a set of three intertwined love stories set in south Louisiana that spans generations. July 28: WGA Writing Competition

Prompt: “Summer’s Dreams

Category: Poetry

This is a fun competition for members. Non-members may also read their entries but won’t be eligible for the token prize. The prompt MUST APPEAR somewhere within the work, and entries must be no longer than 500 words. The author must be present but may allow another to read the piece aloud. All entries must be typed and double-spaced. The story must have the word count, category, title, author’s name, and date of the competition written at the top of the first page, and a paper copy of the winner and runner-up is to be handed in to the vice-president after the judging. An email to [email protected] with the entry will help ensure accuracy. Check your finished work for accuracy, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You may be the one to be published!

The Writers Guild of Acadiana mourns the passing of longtime member David Pierce. David had a strong and unmistakable presence, known especially for his rich, announcer style voice that made every reading memorable. Many of us looked forward to hearing him share excerpts from his engaging and well crafted work.
He will be deeply missed by our guild and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dave Pierce of Abbeville, Louisiana.
Dave was the one who founded the Abbey Players, opening the door to a creative home that has brought so much joy, connection, and community into our lives. His kindness, thoughtfulness, and belief in the arts made a lasting impact that will continue to be felt every time the lights come up on stage.
We are so grateful for the role Dave played in our story and in helping us become part of something truly special. His legacy lives on in the friendships formed, the memories made, and the many performances still to come.
Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Thank you, Dave, for helping us find our place at Abbey Players. You will always be part of this community.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Vermilion Parish Library invites community members to unleash their creativity at its upcoming Library Poetry Hour on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. This exciting event will be held at the Kaplan library branch and is recommended for ages 16 and over.
Whether you are a poet, or a poetry lover, we welcome participants to share their love of the written word in a supportive and family-friendly atmosphere. Performers will have the opportunity to showcase original pieces or share favorite works.
Poetry Hour is a wonderful way for our community to celebrate creativity and discover local talent. We encourage everyone to attend for an afternoon of expression and inspiration, whether as a performer or an audience member. We can’t wait to see what our community has to share.
