Greater Lafayette Civitan Club

Greater Lafayette Civitan Club Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world. Members are dedicated to helping people wherever the need arises.

Civitan International was founded in 1917 by a group of businessmen determined to make a difference in their communities. Civitan's primary missions centers on helping people with developmental disabilities. Club members raise about $1 million annually to fund the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham which focuses on autism, Down syndrome, brain tumors,

epilepsy and other disorders. Local club members choose service projects based on the needs of their community. Our Greater Lafayette County Civitan Club was charter September 30, 2013.

Memorial Day is much more than a long weekend—it’s a day to pause, reflect, and remember the ultimate sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes. From soldiers who fell in battle to Veterans who carried their service with pride until their final days, their legacies live on in the freedoms we enjoy today.
The Greater Lafayette Civitan Club on this Memorial Day weekend 2026 honors the legacies of those who sacrificed their all.

Thanks to Gretchen Shissler, founder of Forest Academy, for speaking at our meeting this week!

Gretchen shared an engaging and informative presentation about the many benefits of outdoor learning and nature-based occupational therapy. She discussed how outdoor education can support creativity, problem solving, cognitive development, social skills, self-discipline, life skills, and academic performance in children.

We appreciate Gretchen taking the time to share the inspiring work being done at Forest Academy!
