Lafayette Lions: How We Serve

The INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LIONS CLUBS is a Civic Organization that has chapters worldwide. Our motto is: TO SERVE, and that is what we do.

The local chapter is the Lafayette Lions Club. Lions Clubs throughout the world are famous for their contributions that are directed to the prevention and treatment of eye diseases and blindness. The majority of the funds that are collected by the Lafayette Lions Club are channeled into three specific areas:

1. Local eye care for citizens who cannot afford the cost. This includes the cost of a basic eye examination by a local optometrist, and covers the cost of the glasses also.

2. Some of our funds are donated to the Lions Club Camp in Leesville, Louisiana. This excellent facility provides a week of fun and learning to children with different types of disabilities throughout Louisiana. Some of these disabilities include: vision problems, mentally challenged and physically handicapped children, and diabetic children.

3. Funds are also allocated to the Lions Eye Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, a facility that is known worldwide for its ability to treat eye diseases, and, in some cases, blindness. This super hospital is run strictly by donations and funds collected from Louisiana Lions Clubs throughout our state.

Used eyeglasses that are no longer needed are also collected by all Lions Clubs and refitted to provide vision correction to thousands of needy people throughout the world.

Also new in our District 8-0 is the Cub Sight Program that provides screening for pre-school and elementary school students throughout Acadiana. The process involves a special camera that examines a child’s eyes with photography and detects early vision problems. This early detection method has already sent many Acadiana youngsters to eye doctors that have helped them to diagnose vision problems that could have led to blindness!
