Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana

Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana We are the People of God uniting in the heart of Jesus Christ. Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana on October 21, 1944.

We join the whole Church in proclaiming the Gospel in word, sacrament, and charity for the salvation of all people. The Diocese of Fort Wayne, the Mother Diocese, was established in 1857. Then, the territory now occupied by the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana had only three small brick churches with resident pastors, and four frame missions. Total Catholic population was about 5,000 people. Missio

naries were still active in the area. On November 11, 1944, the Holy See made the announcement regarding the partitioning of the Fort Wayne Diocese creating the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. The name was expressed in that manner to distinguish it from the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana. The new diocese had 54 parishes and a Catholic population of 31,700. The area designated had 9,832 square miles and comprised 24 counties in northcentral Indiana extending from the Illinois to the Ohio state lines. Catholics comprised fewer than 6 percent of the total population. The area was largely rural.

The Catholic Moment team would like to extend their thanks to everyone who submitted artwork for the June 21 edition of the paper. In fact, so many people submitted art that we couldn’t fit it all in! So, as a bonus, here’s the rest of the fantastic pieces of art that didn't fit in our latest edition.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our Summer 2026 Art Showcase in the latest edition here: https://indd.adobe.com/view/075f75cb-f8b6-491e-af14-1186b731b03e

Congratulations to our diocese's own Guerin Catholic High School on their Class 3A baseball state championship!

Over the weekend, the Golden Eagles took down Andrean High School 9-3 at Victory Field in Indianapolis and captured their first baseball state title — the school's 14th across all sports. Following this year's success, the team will move up to Class 4A next season.

Congratulations on this excellent achievement!

The diocese would like to extend congratulations to the Fishers Knights of Columbus, who recently received the Blessed Michael McGivney Vocations Award at the Indiana Knights of Columbus State Convention!

The award recognizes the Indiana council who held an event that best exemplified support for vocations. The council received the award for its annual Seminarian Dinner held last August. The event featured its largest crowd ever, with over 200 people in attendance including 18 seminarians from the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, and a number of priests and deacons.

Congratulations on this wonderful award!
