Collaborative play is an integral component of child development. It assists with the development of socialization, language, problem solving, and communication skills. Children participating in collaborative play have must engage and cooperate with others for the play to be successful. We see all kinds of collaborative play at Husky, and here are some great examples. 😊🐾❤️

It is truly amazing how much our students share. They share toys and supplies, of course, but they also bravely share of themselves. Students show off every creation, whether it’s a feat of engineering or a work of art. They share the joy of making and the pride in their own work. Children of every age give time, attention, and respect to other members of our community. It’s not unusual to see older children teaching younger ones how to play a game or read a book. This sharing helps builds our bonds of community, and lets children know this is a safe place to be themselves.😊❤️🐾

As a play-based program, our teachers do copious amounts of study on the importance of play for development, and how to best support in within our program. One of the concepts the teachers have been discussing recently is that of scaffolded learning, where teachers act as a “scaffold” or support for the students as they learn, and then step away when the students are able to continue on their own. This could mean allowing students to experiment with something bigger or messier than might traditionally be allowed, knowing there are adults present to step in if needed. It could mean allowing children to try and solve a problem (like a ball stuck in a tree) their own way, without trying to offer an instant solution. And some times it’s just letting them explore Thierry interests without adult interruption.

A key part of building our caring community here at Husky House is the strong bonds teachers form with our students. We work hard to get to know each and every child in our care. While individual children may have their own favorite teachers, our goal is that they trust and feel safe with every one of us. 😊🐾❤️

Our Huskies got the beat! Whether singing or dancing, children love to express themselves though music. Music is an amazing boost to children’s development, boosting cognitive skills (memory, math), language acquisition, emotional regulation, and social skills. We try to give our students every chance we can to “move it, move it!”.

In our November Newsletter to families we shared the importance of “loose parts play” in early childhood development. We see students spend hours with games of their own creation, changing and refining the rules with their classmates as they go along. As the newsletter states, loose parts play helps “develop fine and gross motor skills, enhance cognitive abilities, and cultivate social skills through cooperation and communication”. We see this every time children play here at Husky, whether it be with the cultivated loose parts materials we give them, or with pieces they have collected on their own. Loose parts can be anything from old cardboard packaging to fallen leaves, or even a well placed puddle!

Part of our mission statement here at Husky House is to “nurture the development of responsible, independent, creative, and thoughtful citizens”. There are many ways we assist with this development, but one of the main techniques is to support children’s discovery of the world. Flying paper airplanes, building Lego yo-yos, hopping on stepping stones, or rolling down a hill teach children concepts in physics and spacial reasoning. Loose parts play with rocks, game pieces, leaves, & building toys emphasize literacy, math skills, and engineering. More structured lessons, like cooking or the fingerprint lab activity, teach life skills as well as introduce scientific knowledge. Squishing paint or trying a new dance move deliver amazing sensory experiences. Every question a child asks, every activity they attempt, and every conversation they have is a chance to learn. That’s why we work so hard to give them a chance to discover - to see, hear, touch, smell, or taste something they haven’t encountered before.
