It is with great sadness we say goodbye to longtime company member Shana Ledet Qualls, who passed away yesterday morning.

Shana was a leading lady, a director, an original company member and a great friend. She was the woman that brought light into every room she entered. Her vivacious spirit was contagious. She was a mentor to many of us and so many of us can say that part of who we are is a direct result of Shana loving us and supporting us and cheering us on.

There will never be another like her and we are so fortunate she shared her light with us.

Our sincerest condolences go out to her children and family and all those who knew her and loved her.

We hope this finds all of you safe and well. We wanted to take this moment to update you on plans for the rest of this year.

We have made the difficult decision to suspend our 2020 season and come back full force in 2021. We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary with even more joy and will bring you the same lineup we had planned plus a few surprises.

In the end, we felt as though it was not only in the best interest of our supporters but in our best interest to take a breath. We want to learn the lessons that this unique moment in our country's history can teach us. And your health and the health of our own company is of the utmost importance.

We also feel that now is not the time for us to begin the inevitable fundraising we will have to do to bring you the tenth anniversary season and beyond. That time will come, but it is not that time now.

We do encourage you to give, however. We want to suggest the following as options:

We can't wait to see you in 2021. If you want to get involved, become a part of our ART family, give a gift of time or talent or treasure, or just want to check in, get in touch! We love you, Acadiana. We are here for you. And we will see you soon!

We hope all of you are doing well. Today would have been opening day for Everlasting Chocolate Therapy.. While we wish we could bring you this wonderful show starting tonight, we know we will get to share this story with you eventually! For now, know that we are keeping all of you in our hearts and we are working diligently to continue to prepare for our return and beyond!

Stay well. Stay safe. Take care of each other. We will see you soon.

The second show of our 2020 Tenth Anniversary Season was commissioned by Acadiana Rep in honor of our 10 years here in South Louisiana.

Hero: A Tale of the Bayou is an original piece that takes place right here in South Louisiana and is written by Darcy Parker Bruce, a playwright we know you will love!

Frankie is preparing for the rapture and Arlo found a baby in the bayou and Evie is longing for someone who’s gone gone gone. A play about searching for your lost heart in the back country of Louisiana, but also a little bit kind of a play about monsters.

Darcy Parker Bruce is a playwright and educator from New Haven, CT, and a graduate of the MFA Playwriting program at Smith College. They're currently part of the faculty at several Connecticut Colleges, where they teach Playwriting and Theater Activism. In the summer they join the Sewanee Writers’ Conference as part of their staff. Darcy's work has traveled across the US from New York to Hawaii, and has been developed through Smith College, the Great Plains Theater Conference, The Bechdel Group, Strange Sun Theatre's Greenhouse Series, and 20% Theatre Chicago, among others. Darcy was the recipient of a 2017 Tennessee Williams Scholarship through the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and was granted ATHE's 2018 Judith Royer Award For Excellence in Theater, which brought new play SOLDIER POET to Boston. SOLDIER POET was also the 2018 Connecticut State Recipient of Portland Stage's Clauder Prize. Additionally, their plays have enjoyed workshop productions with 2cents Theatre, NYC's Fresh Fruit Festival, Otherworld Theatre, and Dixon Place Lounge, among others. New play ALWAYS PLENTY OF LIGHT AT THE STARLIGHT ALL NIGHT DINER was a 2016 Semi-finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference as well as a 2016 Semi-finalist for Kitchen Dog Theatre's New Works Fest, and received its world premiere with Know Theatre of Cincinnati in 2019. New play ALL WE KNOW IS NOT ENOUGH was also a semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference in 2017, was a finalist for Unicorn Theatre’s 2018 new play-reading series, Trustus Theatre's 2018 new play-reading series, and was also a finalist for the 2016 Seven Devils Playwrights' Conference. New play SOLDIER POET recently premiered in D.C. with Theatre Prometheus. Their play EAST OF THE SUN was published in Summer of 2017 through Applause/ Hal Leonard’s Best American Short Plays. Darcy has most recently been commissioned by Chester Theater Company to write a play for their 2020 Season

The first show of our 2020 Tenth Anniversary Season, opening on May 1st, is Everlasting Chocolate Therapy by Steven Hayet and directed by Debbi Ardoin.

Fifteen years after touring the famous chocolate factory, the former gum-chewer Bo returns to confront the man who made her blue only to discover that Chuck, a fellow golden ticket finder, is now in charge of operations. Since being hand picked as an eleven year old, Chuck has struggled to follow in his predecessor’s footsteps, and the frustrated orange workers of the factory want a change, reuniting Chuck and Bo with the three other contestants to determine who should be the next Chocolate Man. Everlasting Chocolate Therapy explores the bittersweet reality of the five not-so-lucky golden ticket finders and their attempts to overcome the consequences of childhood decisions.

Steven Hayet is a New Jersey playwright whose work has been performed from Los Angeles to London and New York to New Zealand. His W***y Wonka-inspired play Everlasting Chocolate Therapy has had readings in New York and South Carolina, but he is thrilled it will find its home at Acadiana Repertory Theatre. His short play Date With Death has been performed in 7 countries including at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe opening the Big Bite Size Breakfast Show (Shortlist Winner - The Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award.) Other works include the musical Pegasus (co-written with Britt Bonney) and short plays Playing With Fired (Smith & Kraus's Best Ten-Minute Plays of 2019), Talking Points (City Theatre), and Dinosaur (Short+Sweet Sydney). He is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and Rutgers University. Member of The Dramatists Guild. www.stevenhayet.com

Ten years ago, Acadiana Repertory Theatre was founded to produce work that had not been performed yet in Acadiana. Acadiana Rep was also founded to be a place where a resident company of artists could come together production after production, as a collective, to give life to the work we chose. In 2013 we shifted our focus and our mission to solely working with new and emerging playwrights from across the country to serve as a lab and safe harbor for them to develop work that, we hope, will have a long life after us. We have had the joy of working with over 25 playwrights to develop the beautiful stories they have created. This year we celebrate ten years of creation and telling stories. This year we celebrate ten years of growing and developing as a regional presence but, more importantly, as another piece of the cultural landscape of Lafayette and Acadiana. We celebrate ten years of telling stories that have the power to move and inspire and entertain all written by voices we believe need to be heard.

This year, we will bring you three productions, including a show that we have comissioned, as well as a brand new programming event, The Downtown Reading Series. The Downtown Reading Series will bring us out of the theatre into other parts of downtown for nights of readings where our audience gets to help us in the development process.

We thank you for your support over the last ten years. Consider buying an ARTPass to support us throughout this year. We hope you enjoy this anniversary season and we look forward to the next ten years.

We will announce the first show of the season around 11am!
