We are so sad to share the news that Festival is called off this spring, but that will not stop our Greening Team from moving forward and evolving our mission for Festival International de Louisiane as well as other festivals.
We will use this time to build upon our plan and will be sharing more news with you all very soon. Stay safe!

This was the night it all came to fruition. After 10 weeks of preparation and planning, we were officially funded by 24 Hour Citizen Project and it's investors last November. There were so many emotions going on that night. Elation. Pride. Humility.
Since then, we have come so far in making our little idea a reality.
We'd like to thank all the wonderful staff of Festival International de Louisiane and couldn't be happier to partner with such an amazing organization.
We're excited to share all the many things that are coming your way in 2020! 🙏

Our Mission For Change

Team Greening Festival will reduce the amount of waste created at Festival International and be part of catalyzing a Styrofoam-free Lafayette! The ultimate goal of this project is to put Festival International on the road to becoming a “zero waste” event. The first step is replacing Styrofoam serviceware items (i.e. plates, bowls, and clamshells) used by Festival vendors with compostable versions made out of bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane mills.

There are compostable equivalents to all Styrofoam plates, bowls, and clamshells used today. We chose to focus on bagasse as our plant-based item of choice because of the natural tie to the south Louisiana region. Styrofoam and plastic never deteriorate or will ever completely go away. But bagasse, as well as many other plant-based alternative options, will complete its’ natural cycle and return to the earth.

Future Plan:

The beauty of plant based materials comes full circle if you are able to capture them once Festival-goers have finished eating. These materials, along with any food residue and leftovers, can be sent to compost at a right-sized and managed facility. When managed properly and mixed with other organic material, oxygen, and water; all of this plant-based waste will break back down into healthy, rich soil! It is very important that no other materials get mixed in though, so we would start with collection in select areas only (i.e. Parc San Souci) and follow Louisiana Football’s model of hand sorting compost after each event to make sure that no other waste materials end up in the compost pile. This work would be completed by volunteers similar to the volunteers who handle recycling at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.
