This is our mother, Francine Louise Shivers.

When she was a cillege junior. she and our father were kicked out of Southern University housing because my dad protested the school's agenda to shut down HBCUs. And other shenanigans going on there.

The SU police arrested my father and told my mom that she had a couple of hours to move out of their family housing. She was 21, a junior and with a newborn, just weeks old, our big headed brother.

With pride, she picked up Tito and walked out of the apartment at 2am.

The next year, she didn't have housing so she slept in the dorms of friends until she graduated that spring as Southern University's valedictorian.

She is many things. But today, that's our mother. That is our foundation.

Happy Mother's Day.

Join Black Farmers Index for a Farmers Workshop and a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 20th. For a farmers meet and greet from 2PM - 5 PM.

Then to beat the heat, we will host La Fete as a Night Farmers Market from 5PM-9PM.

Our theme this year, The Bayou Boogie.

We moved our annual La Fete market to warmer months and are again collaborating with Francis-Benoit American Legion Post 504 for a day of farm fun and community.

Our farmers workshop is our work with Transition to Organic Partnership Program with where we support and educate farmers on how to transition, apply and successfully obtain a USDA certified organic grower.

For the talk, we'll have Dr. Dana Nettles of who is entering her 3rd year as a certified grower.

We also have other local agricultural experts joining the conversation to talk about their farming. From Iowa, Louisiana, the prolific retired professor, Hilery Gobert, will detail how he operates a chemical free 66 acre cattle and produce farm.

Farming couple Nicole Johnson and Trey Lively are New Liberia farmers who are known in local markets in Acadiana. They will speak on being millennial farmers. Also Nicole will talk about how she co-founded a market in Lafayette's food desert.

Making a trip to another part of Creole country is of Farm Dat. A former FSA Louisiana agricultural commissioner, he will introduce you to Bayou Farming and running an animal and reptile farm. You know we are in the swamp with that talk.

We also have other farmers joining us like Cryer's Produce Farm from Mt. Herman and right outside of Baton Rouge.

For the night market, we welcome farmers and vendors.

All farmers welcomed and more information to come. If you have any questions DM us or email us at [email protected]

Happy New Year🫶🏾

Thankful that we powered through a year of challenges and growth. So many lessons. So many illuminations.

But the farmers keep us motivated and the generosity of the people kept us going.

Some say 2025 was a test drive. But, we know the assignment. Power up good people.

Here's some of our work from last year. We cannot believe what we did, and the growing community who is working to build this food ecosystem.

How does it feel to feed a community for over 100 years? Ask Tonya Cryer of Cryer's Produce a family farm located in Mt. Herman, Louisiana.

Two years ago Tonya Cryer made the transition of her life. She left a job as an highly-sought after A-list stylist on Hollywood and Atlanta’s TV and film sets for rural Louisiana.

Between flying to sets in Atlanta and Los Angeles, she is tending to basil, eggplants and a local favorite watermelon.

While Tonya carries the pride of her father, she also has branched out on her own.

When Tonya stepped in, she enlisted in a number of AG programs to learn the business and strengthen her farming skills. In 2023, she was introduced to the USDA program when she attended a breakfast and farmer's market hosted by Black Farmers Index.

In 2024, she was paired with a TOPP mentor through floridaorganics with a goal to transition several of the plots she stewards on the Cryer land. To assist, The Index has provided her an additional mentor, Dr. Dana Nettles, who assists her with using organic and no-till growing methods.

She has been working on expanding her no-till patch that uses organic growing practices, and making a lot of upgrades on the farm for agrotourism and one day, to be used for film and TV production.
