This week at Rotary Club of Zachary, we were honored to hear from Michelle Gwyn, Rotarian and owner of Southern Clinical Research. Michelle shared an informative presentation about the importance of clinical research trials and the role they play in advancing medicine and improving patient care.

She discussed how clinical trials help researchers evaluate new medications, treatments, and medical devices while ensuring patient safety through carefully monitored studies. Michelle also highlighted how participation in research can provide patients access to emerging therapies and contribute to medical breakthroughs that benefit communities everywhere.

For the past 16 years, Michelle and Southern Clinical Research have been serving the Zachary community through their commitment to healthcare innovation and research. We appreciate Michelle taking the time to educate our club and for the positive impact her work continues to make locally and beyond.

You already know that Rotary International is made up of over 46,000 individual clubs, run by their individual boards of directors. If you're reading this, you likely know that for administrative purposes, clubs are organized into districts, each managed by a District Governor.

But you may not have ever stopped to consider who manages Rotary International. That's its 17-member board of directors. Districts are grouped into Zones, and Zones are paired in groups of two, the purpose of which is to elect the 17 directors to Rotary International's board.

At least every eight years, as the number of Rotarians changes in each part of the world, Rotary's Board adjusts which districts are in which zone, to equalize each zone to contain 20,000-35,000 Rotarians.

As a result of the most recent re-zoning, District 6200 will be a part of Zone 30, along with districts in Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Our Zone will be paired with districts in Zone 29 (districts in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Wisconsin) for purposes of electing directors to represent our two paired Zones.

Instead of shots with needles, some polio vaccinators in remote communities of Afghanistan are starting to use jet injectors. Spring-powered devices shoot a tiny stream of vaccine through the outer layer of skin. All the person being vaccinated feels is a quick press on the skin, hears a soft click, and they are protected. Read more here:

On a cloudy morning in Afghanistan’s Laghman province, Dr. Arsala set out for Alingar, a rugged, mountain-wrapped district he had visited many times before. After 12 years as a provincial polio officer, he knew the rhythm of polio campaigns: the early starts, the long drives, the predictable chall...
