The Journey of the LRGH Auxiliary ...

Talk of opening a hospital in Laconia, NH began in 1891, and when local resident Rhoda Ladd gifted her entire estate to the Town of Laconia, the talk became a reality...

In 1893, the Laconia Hospital Association legally formed, as did the Ladies Hospital Aid Society. The ladies hit the ground running raising much needed funds to open a hospital, hosting an elegant charity ball and soliciting donations door-to-door. A system of bands was formed, dedicated to the pursuit of specific hospital items. One band, composed of 10 women pledged five cents of their own money every week to help defray the cost of dishes, they were aptly named the ‘China Band.’ Other bands raised funds for linens, curtains, and hospital gowns. The first hospital in Laconia, NH, the Cottage Hospital, opened in Ladd’s former Court Street home in 1897. In 1905, the Laconia Hospital Association gratefully accepted a deed of land gift from the Reverend Jeremiah Jewett to build a new hospital in its present location on Highland Street. Once again, the Ladies Hospital Aid Society stepped up to help raise funds to support the opening of a new hospital. In 1967, the hospital changed its name to Lakes Region General Hospital (LRGH), and the Ladies Aid Society legally changed their name and began welcoming men into the newly incorporated Lakes Region General Hospital Auxiliary.

Today, the LRGH Auxiliary proudly provides: - Cancer Comfort bags for Breast Cancer surgery patients - Hospital beds, transport chairs, blanket warmers, body scanners, and other medical equipment - A Crisis Clothing Closet in the ER for patients who need clothing upon discharge - Hand-crafted Comfort Dolls, Stuffed Animals and Eyeglass Cases for patients - Annual scholarships to local students pursuing careers in the medical field - A courtesy golf cart to transport patients and visitors from their parking space to the hospital and medical offices - Annual sponsorships of hospital fundraising events: Red Dress, Tanger 5K, Golf Classic, as well as capital campaigns.
