9/11 Cypress Grove Living Memorial

9/11 Cypress Grove Living Memorial 'Restore the Northshore' needs Doers & Donors to plant five groves of bald cypress trees as 9/11 Living Memorials to the victims of the Attack on America. Lt.

9/11 Cypress Grove Living Memorial, in affiliation with the Lacombe Heritage Center, is dedicated to creating living memorials to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Residents of towns in St. Tammany Parish were among those who perished that day. In their honor, we seek to plant 15,000 Cypress trees in locations throughout Southeast Louisiana over the next tw

o years. Governor Billy Nungesser has given us the full support of his office in securing the land and rights of way. We have an agreement with a supplier for the trees at a very low cost. But, we need your help. We have to purchase the trees and plant them. We’re looking for doers and donators. Follow us to stay current on news, updates and information on this project and ways you can become part of this effort, which will not only honor the lives of lost loved ones, but also help improve our environment for those who come after us. We leave the way you choose to participate up to you. Whether you volunteer to help at one of our events or support us with monetary donations, we sincerely thank you for your support.

Early morning in Buffalo Cove and the birds are already enjoying their breakfast. The Atchafalaya Basin has many coves and rookeries that are home to countless wading birds like egrets, herons, spoonbills, and ibises. The birds rely on these secluded, shallow-water areas to nest, feed, and reproduce. In protecting the Basin, we are also protecting the beautiful birds who live there. Visit our website to learn more about how you can donate to support our efforts.

On March 28, 1699, Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne Sieur d'Iberville and four coureurs de bois in two canoes camped the night on a sandy remnant of ancient shoreline, now known as Milton's Island, just off shore present day Goose Point. Milton's Island is now submerged beneath the brackish waters of Lake Pontchartrain and the shore has receded several hundred feet, eroded by the encroaching lake waters. In his journal he officially reported to King Louis IV of France about the immense cypress forests that lined the north shore about three leagues from the shore.

In 1775, American naturalist, William Bartram in his travels from the Pearl River to the Mississippi, also noted the thick stands of cypress in the area of Lacombe and Mandeville. Today, they are all gone; clear cut during and after Reconstruction by Northern timber interests who paid occupying Union forces 25 cents an acre for this living resource.
Now, a modern day hero is intent upon Restoring the Northshore. Ta daa! Enter Mike Cambe. Unassuming but determined, Mike is Project Manager for our Adopt-A-Spot Cypress Tree Planting Project.
You can help. So don your cape and grab your shovel, or, if you can't dig in the dirt, dig in your wallets. We need Doers and Donors.
Mike needs you to help him plant 15,000 cypress seedlings this Fall into next Spring. Join our One Hundred Club. For $50 bucks you can donate 100 tax deductible seedlings to one of our five 9/11 Living Cypress Grove Memorials. Contact Mike at [email protected] or call 985-687-9088 for info on how you can help Restore the Northshore.
