The Lackawanna Serbs The year 1906 marked the beginning of the first Serbian benevolent society “St. The “St.

Stevan” in Lackawanna organized under the leadership of Blazo Mamula. This lodge was part of a federation called “Srpski Savez Svesna Srbadija” which later became “Srpskim Savezom Sloboda.” In 1913 a new “Balkan Lodge #53” was formed under the auspices of another national order called the “Serbian Federal Defense United.” Common to each group was the philosophy of bringing Serbian immigrants t

ogether and maintaining some degree of security to their members. Consequently, the leadership of the two groups came together and spearheaded the cooperative effort to establish a Serbian Orthodox Church. By 1917, they had constructed St. Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church on Church Street in Lackawanna. On March 19, 1933 the president of the “St. Stevan” Lodge, Mile Golic, and the president of the “Balkan” Lodge, Petar Plavjanic, gathered an assembly of lodge members who voted to unify the two groups. Stevan and Balkan Lodge #52” of Lackawanna, NY was created.
