Ryan's Case for Smiles L.A. Ryan's Case for Smiles Los Angeles Chapter

Ryan's Case for Smiles ( formerly ConKerr Cancer) started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face. He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Since then the pillowcase project, Ryan's Case for Smiles (

formerly known as Conkerr Cancer), has grown in amazing ways. We have provided over 1 million pillowcases made by thousands of volunteers from across North America and in South Africa. School groups, sewing circles, church groups and fabric stores have all pitched in and are making pillowcases for the kids. An exciting new program has been to take fabric and sewing machines to hospitals and sew with the patients and their families. Ryan's Case for Smiles ( formerly known as ConKerr Cancer) has been able to make amazing progress towards fulfilling our goal of making hospital stays as pleasant as possible for chronically ill children and their parents. Simultaneously the pillowcase project has fostered a spirit of community and volunteer service in communities across North America. Unfortunately the number of sick children never ends, and we must continue to expand our efforts to help brighten patients’ lives and raise awareness about childhood cancer and other childhood diseases. .

After losing their daughter Lily, the Johnson family held on to her Ryan’s Case for Smiles pillowcases.

Sometimes they sleep on them, a quiet way for the family to feel close to her. Families tell us these small comforts become lasting reminders of the child they love and will never forget.

In moments like these, families need support that continues long after they leave the hospital.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles provides resources that help parents and siblings navigate grief, honor their child’s memory, and begin the long journey toward healing.

The Red Shoe Gala helps ensure families receive the support they need to heal.

Stand with families like Lily’s. Become a sponsor or make a gift today.

Awesome pillowcase sighting!

Pillowcase Sighting!

We spotted one of our bright pillowcases at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and this one came with the sweetest scene.

This adorable patient was all smiles while playing with a Child Life Specialist, proving once again that comfort and joy can live side by side, even on hospital days. Seeing our pillowcase in the middle of such a happy moment reminds us why we do what we do.

Keep the sightings coming!

At 2:17 a.m., the hospital room is finally quiet.

Mateo is asleep after another round of treatments. His mother, Maria, sits beside the bed listening to the steady rhythm of the monitors.

At home his sister Sofia is wondering when life will be normal again.

When a child is seriously ill, the entire family’s world changes.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles supports families like Mateo’s, bringing comforting pillowcases to children in the hospital and providing resources that help parents and siblings cope with fear, uncertainty, and the stress of a child’s illness.

The 2026 Red Shoe Gala helps make this support possible.
